Coldest, but also hottest, reveal ever in anime. A absolutely genius moment that always catches people off guard in how nonchalantly it's done. Also there was a lot of foreshadowing way back in season 1 but also in episode 2x1 when they went to Conny's home village and Conny is talking about his parents. Watch the reaction of Bertholdt when Reiner talks to Connie about his mom. He looks very worried. As if Reiner was going to do something wrong. In fact, you catch many glimpses of Bertholdt looking at Reiner with a worried face at lot in season 1 and up to that reveal. Also in 2x3 when Sasha brought a report to Hange as they are all talking to the wall priest. That report is what is discussed 12 hours later. Lastly, one could argue that Reiner's character is modeled off of someone who has a severe case of PTSD.

Reiner is getting drunk off his own supply and buying his own con... it was much easier to wage war on humanity when he didn't put a face to them, but after getting to know the other Scouts, it really messed with his head

The crazy thing too is that Reiner and Bertholt at the time didn't know that Annie was found and captured (this is why he says "I almost died in that titan's hand" instead of mentioning Annie -to him, no one knows it's her. This also explains why Eren was a bit slow to realize and why didn't react much, this happens a less than 24 hours after he fought Annie and was still recovering from the fight

If you go back to the episode reiner got "stuck" in Annie's hand, you'll see that a few moments earlier, Armin told Reiner and Jean to put on their hood so that Annie didn't know who they were (because she wouldn't risk killing eren), but right before Reiner "attacked" Annie you can see him purposfully taking the hood off. Back then you would just think Reiner was careless and focused on helping Armin. But now we know that Reiner actually WANTED her to see his face because he knew she wouldn't kill him.

"it was so much but nothing." This is why I love this show. All your questions get answered only to bring you more questions than you had before. Now that you've seen this episode it's so much fun to go back and see all the little things that, in the moment, meant nothing but now are obvious foreshadowing. Go back one episode to the tower falling scene and look what Bertolt was about to do before Ymir saved them.

Your reaction from that moment to the end of the episode was worth the subscription by itself. With the newly added context I'm not sure if you've put together yet that Eren and Reiner/Berthold are roughly the same age, same as when they would have attacked the wall in the first episode. Just food for thought.

It's so funny thinking in reflection how much of a surprise Reiner as the Armoured Titan is despite when you look at the design for that titan in the first few episodes it looks a hell of a lot like Reiner. Bertholdt and the Colossal Titan not so much. The quick reveal is done so well too, usually big reveals are amped up but in a state of confusion and suspense they just breeze through it to make you even more confused at what you just read/heard. Also Haylee might want to wrap her arm in bubble wrap or something cause Carissa on multiple occasions has been close to yanking it off lol

Please do and I highly suggest you do when the entire show is over and i even think it would be funny if you either looked at your notebook at the time OR watched your own full-reaction on the side while watching, and then do like a "per arc/season" long montage of you binging the entire show again, and every time you A- find a new easter egg. B- laugh at how absurd your own theory was at the time or how GOOD your theory was at the time. and C- how amazing everything is actually tied up together, including character motivations and body gestures or side eyes... For example, in the episode where annie taught eren how to knock someone down, and eren used that move on Jean? in that dining hall, people were just having a casual conversation when someone asked about eren seeing the Collossal and the Armored titans that destroyed his city. In that moment, eren started talking about he's going to kill them all, and that they're not that scary and that he will never stop until he finishes the job... andddddd in the background, you can see Reiner and Berthold do a spin-take, they were in their own conversation and then suddenly when they mentioned the 2 titans, THEIR titans, they immediately started listening to the conversation behind them ffrom eren instead of whatever they were doing at the time :)

100% agree. The second watch of AoT is a COMPLETELY different experience. and I say that as someone who's rewatched the series more than 70 times now and STILL find new easter eggs and "reveals" that were literally put in my faces ages ago. Another example of this, sisters, is the episode early on in season 1 when eren hurt his head learning the Omni directional gear, in the episode the mikasa kept telling him at dinner that she will follow him whereever and then sasha got robbed out of a potato from mikasa. Remember that moment? what if i told you that during that moment, which was before eren got nearly eaten and killed (so before he turned into a titan), you can see that eren had a bandaid on his head from the headsmack anddd.... IT WAS STEAMING, because he was a titan at the timeand didnt know it, and he subconsciously was healing his own forehead at lunch, it's only there for a few frames and then they cut away as if the producer said "yeah that's enough of that tidbit, you'll find out more later"... but on a few rewatches, i can tell you there's HUNDREDS of these moments in the last second and even MORE in this season, especially the first few episodes of this season and the next few episodes... you'll see things, hear things, go "huh? what does that even mean? that was so random and out of context", but then much later (or on a rewatch), you'll go "OMG that was the biggest hint ever and i didnt even put two and two together WHAT?!"

oh and fun fact, sisters. If you go and watch the episode where Ymir is about to turn to into titan, watch Berthold in the background. For a couple of frames, when the tower was under attack, he had his hand near his mouth as if he deciding if he should bite it or not and turn into the colossal, which may have damaged all the people around him and the tower and then leave with reiner... but Ymir turning into a titan caught them both off guard, and Reiner entered some sort of a psychotic trance while he was having a flashback about this titan (who we are saying looks like Ymir's titan), eating somoene who saved his and bert's life a while back... he was so shook, that he wasn't even aware of his surroundings anymore when he hurt historia's leg... and then berthold just kept trying to calm him down, reminding him that he's a WARRIOR (as opposed to a soldier), and that they should be leaving to their hometown again.

to be fair, sisters. I did warn you to pay attention to the background conversations a while back LOL... We have all been waiting so long for this reveal. Now take your notebook, and start writing "alliances" or who likes who or hates who or is allies with who or is suspicious of who, and look back at the past episodes in your mind and then take a step back and ... well... put your tinfoil hat on... or double pad it at this point :P

After multiple re-watches, I've noticed that when the flag breaks and everyone tenses up, the only scout that doesn't break character and turn around in any way is Armin. Everyone else tenses up and either turns towards Reiner and co. and/or grabs their swords (Mikasa), despite hange's order to not give anything away until they can get them underground.

This show has SO MANY easter eggs and foreshadowing, it is INSANE. You definitely have to rewatch the show AND the opening and ending songs to all the seasons to catch them. I am on my third rewatch and there are still some things I am just noticing and I know there are still some left to be discovered.

There were few hints before but what really got me was the face expression of Reiner when Eren says: "You two have been driven far enough away from your hometown". If you go back you see his mirror in the water, how Reiner just snaps (just like the flag snappnig). Hence why Reiner keep saying he's a warrior and not a soldier. This episode was everything.

This episode was absolutely mental. Hajime Isayama just casually dropping the biggest plot twist in the history of anime like it was nothing. Just mind boggling!!🤯 and ufff that music when Reiner and Barthold were transforming. Hiroyuki Sawano went insane with the music. Seriously Haylo and Kiss, since you rewatched 2x5 based on another comment and saw how Berthold was ready to turn to stay alive in grave danger, I am telling you, there are so many such moments that we can't tell you about which are there from literally beginning of series. Many people don't rewatch series, but those who do for AOT get gifted so so much, that if this show was 8/10 for them, it would be instantly 10/10 at just first few eps rewatch. I would urge you to speedwatch AOT after finishing and post in patreon, just announce before on YT and see how many people join/join back. You will be surprised how some of the things that are said have more meaning related to characters like Annie, Reiner and Berthold.

Few interresting things this episode, no spoiler( i promise) also why its my favourite season of all of them: The flag that broke, Literally showed how silent that whole situation was. They were all moving trailers, carrying supply, discussing plans etc a few moment ago, but that flag, felt like a hearing a needle drop. Second, when hange was talking and telling everyone to move away and armin calling eren and mikasa walking forward but looking back at the same time. I specifically remember this situation, when i first saw it years ago because how very odd this whole interaction felt. It was out of character for A LOT of them. But if you look at this scene again, there were a bunch of these flags behind them, wall flags, no big deal. ALL RED, litteral red flags. Motherfcker!!. All this building up to the non chalant and anticlimatic reveal to a massive "this is not a joke" moment. And everybody's suspicion. It made me realise that every scene and dialogues ARE purposeful and VERY important. If you go back on the ymir tower hold down. There were MASSIVE hints dropped.
