Jonathan is canon as a character, though. He's shown in canon (at least in the anime) when the Navy is gathering for you-know-what. He doesn't play any major role, but he is there.

it feels like in this episode especially, the animation got a little bit of an upgrade. Some of the actions and scenery just feels more fluid and alive than normal lol

When I first started watching One Piece (other than the 4kids dub) I recognized Robin on her first appearance because she was so hot! XD

Correct me if I'm wrong, guys, but I believe that Commander Jonathan is the 4th Vice Admiral to appear in the show, however he's the 3rd whose rank is stated as such, at this point.
