The inside of Ed’s pocket watch, which we see in the Rush Valley episode, has the date they tried human transmutation. I don’t remember the exact date but i believe the year is 1911.

so basically, Hohenheim was saying those things so that Edward can hear them. he saw the dog going in Edwards room, knowing he was up and dog was going to greet him. he did this so that Edward would get a burden off from his shoulders and learn that he didnt kill Trisha twice. he, as a father, gave him a hint to learn something, without being a helicopter parent. well played
