each generation will always see the last generations punishment as abusive. Kds get softer with each generation. Joels dad was hitting with a belt, back when I was a kid, thats a normal thing especially if youre buying drugs. Joels dad wasn’t abusing them, he wasnt hurting them just for the sake of hurting them, he was trying to curb their negative actions but with the knowledge he only knew, he was trying to do better than his dad by punishing them lighter than his dad. But each generation will always see the older punishment as abuse. Just like how joels dad sees his dad and just how tommy and joel see their dad and so on

My favorite episode of the series. Really highlights how imperfect Joel is. We’re meant to empathize w him since we only see his POV but this shows that he’s willing to lie and make cold choices for the sake of those he holds dear. Not a bad trait to have in a zombie apocalypse but can definitely get complicated w personal relationships.
