Everyone else seems to be covering Ace so to answer your question about why Buggy looked pixalated. It is something animators in Japan started doing to show that a character on screen is seriously nervous or uncomfortable with the situation. If you remember at the time the Transponder snail had just started working again and his "crew" was telling him to commit to killing White bread on air. Then in his nerviousness he was just repeating the same line over and over. He was then told hey thats not good enough try harder and he came back pixalated.

I really have no intention of being a dick right here, but Oda does have a problem with killing characters, and one major character death in 500 episodes doesn't change that. Which doesn't at all take away from this episode, or this arc, but there is definitely some truth to that complaint. Pell from Alabasta is one of many examples.

On my Mount Rushmore of most iconic anime moments, but yeah this one felt like someone I knew in real life died when I first read the manga. Turning the page to the admirals fist through Ace's chest was one of the most shocking moments of my life, just so horrifying and sad.

Congrats. There's another react channel that just got through this section and jesus she was a wreck after this episode. lmfao. She had her makeup all over the damn place haha. Even for us guys, this was a wicked story arc, story moment, etc. Straight devastating. Ironically, I didn't really even like ace as a character until I watched through a second time and picked up on things, my first watch through I was watching it because I had friends that wanted me to watch it, so up until water 7ish I wasn't jiving with the story, but now that I'm a strawhat pirate, I absolutely love ace.

Every One Piece fan before these episodes: I love Oda Every One Piece fan while watching these episodes: Goddammit Oda 😭😭😭 Proceeds to click next episode Oda is so cruel for doing this to us after Luffy and Mr. 3 freed Ace 😭😭😭 I don't know how many times I've watched Marineford (it's a lot, but it's been a while), but it doesn't hurt any less now than it did the first time I watched these 2 episodes 😭😭😭😭😭 It's been almost a decade-and-a-half since these 2 episodes aired, but it feels like it was yesterday and a 100 years ago all at once. RIP Ace...you found your family 😭😭😭

This is one of the episodes I always look forward to when i watch people new to the series. I know that sounds weird but THIS is One Piece. The heart, the emotion, the drama, everything about it. Ace's death is a major turning point for Luffy. He sort of loses some of his wide eyed innocence, he's still very much Luffy but he's forever marked by this. It changes his entire mindset about the people close to him.

They've been having audio issues here and there for the past couple of months, is their equipment dying or something? I think you're one of the very few reactors that realized those beads flying off of Ace were from his necklace, a lot other reactors thought they were blood or didn't know what they were so coodles to you guys! A very positive perspective on chr deaths esp for the story! Now you know the power scale and the seriousness of OP esp in a war of the best where Luffy is powerless and outmatched, the Strawhats & Luffy can't catch a break and they've been suffering since Sabaody.

while Ace felt he had an answer to the question of his life at the end, it is tragic Ace never realized his life was not something to be questioned. through his actions and words Ace tried to prove his life, thats partly why he thought he wanted fame, he wanted to make his life fact and known. Garp not knowing if he should tell a young Ace, a child, that he deserved to be born and instead leaving it as a question in Ace's mind is a source of Ace's tragedy. Garp's inability is also perfectly representative of a navy defined by its belief that it can decide some lives are not deserving of life, like Ohara, fishmen, and slaves, for example.

Ace's death is necessary for Luffy to find growth in his journey to be the King of the Pirates. I hope we get to see this in the OPLA.

I'm curious if either of you expected this outcome to any degree, I know personally I was so used to Oda never killing anyone that I thought no way he would take out such a major character. Luffy has had it so rough though, he watched his whole crew get blasted off to who knows where, almost dies in a prison break, gets thrust into a war where he's forced to rely on everyone else, then watches his own brother die in his arms all in the same week. It's not uncommon for characters to have failures they must overcome, but to have so many back to back to back is just hard to watch especially for such a normally uplifting and cheery character.

I remember when i first read this chapter in the manga I was in denial for some time after. Never would i have dreamed that Oda would let one of the main emotional anchors of Luffy die. In flashbacks ok. Old main characters sure. I could have imagined Whitebeard , maybe even Garp. But Ace? Never. One Piece changed for me that time. Not in a bad way, but wow. All the build up that people only die in Flashbacks for this... respect Oda respect.

Now that we're here...Oda had planned from the beginning that Ace was going to be the first "real time" death in One Piece (meaning excluding flashbacks). I was, at first, critical of the lack of death in this series, namely Dorry, Dalton, Pell, etc., but after knowing that it was all being saved for Ace I've completely accepted Oda's decision to do so. The fact that he created all sorts of scapegoats for the other instances just to build up to this single moment for Ace gives it so much more weight and greater of an impact. It's such good story telling despite being so excruciatingly painful.

Them beeing traumatized for life now that ace scene gets me everytime.... anyways Haylo&Kiss you need a secondary audiorecording device(even if its of lower quality) that you use as backup everytime when recording if one of your reactions fails. Like the audio unfortunatley really failed at a crucial scene. An external backup device thats recording at the same time(and can be deleted after everything is fine)could have saved that scene.
