One thing One Piece does so well is the ugly crying of characters. Anime, and especially Western Media, you rarely see the characters actually ugly cry. It's what makes the moments so real because no one cries beautifully in real life.

I found an interview from 2018 about the crying scene in One Piece so let me share part of it with you guys. (Sorry for the poor English translation since I'm not an English speaker :'(() Furukawa(Ace's VA): The last scene of "Fire Fist" Ace, which is praised by many people, is only possible because of Mayumi's crying act afterwards. She cries so hard that she can't stand it any longer, and everyone is taken away by that. That part is where Mayumi, not me, is the best. Tanaka(Luffy's VA): No, no, no, no......Thanks for really lifting me up. But you know what's really great is Oda's portrayal of the original story. Even in the crying scenes, there is a little smile that comes through. That's what makes it so touching. Furukawa: I know! Tanaka: For instance, the climax of Alabasta, the parting scene with Vivi. A woman who thought she was definitely going to get on my ship makes the decision not to. Isn't it......sad to hear her saying, "I'm staying in this country"? But the next moment, Luffy says with a big smile, "I see!" Even though he really wants to start crying. That scene was very rewarding. Hirano: I wonder if that's what makes them so popular with adult viewers. Tanaka: I think so. Also, in One Piece, even beautiful characters have runny noses lol And he makes them scream in that nasal voice. I hate and love how Oda shows us Luffys pain. It's so heartbreaking to see him like this but often times in shows or movies the aftermath of a death is rarely shown or people kinda get over it pretty quick, which just isn't realistic at all. But man, seeing these episodes again is so painful

I just need to clarify that the subtitles is a bit weird going forward. When "Big Mam" got mentioned, that’s the subs being weird. It’s actually Big Mom, not Big Mam
