I interpret this episode a bit differently, but your take is great! Just before the attack on the village, when the girl went out to look at the ring again, scared of devils, she wonders if all her family will go to heaven and she will go to hell by herself. But then, all her family dies "delivered from suffering", and she is the only one still alive, meaning ; life is suffering, and hell is on earth. Is that too grim? That might be too grim.

The manga author, Makoto Yukimura, had specifically written Askeladd's character for Thorfinn, but he didn't expect him to be one of the main characters in this story. Yukimura describes Askeladd as being multidimensional (both good and bad, or neither), and Askeladd is his favorite character in this story.
