Canute doesn’t want unity like you say he’s after war, doing dirty tricks along the way. Right now, he’s scheming in underhanded ways, while Thorkell is the one who’s truly a man. Kanute he is like the villain now.

Its never outright said, but Thorkell probably has grown to dislike Canute not because hes looking for peace outright, but rather because its pretty obvious hes been assassinating his rivals to ascend rather than traditional warfare and duels. Thorkell likely sees that as cowardly.

To clarify the weird word haha, a Witenagemot comes from the Old English word for wise men ("witan") and means a "meeting of the wise men"; literally, it's just a meeting of the King's council, including nobles and clergymen and stuff, to give opinions to the King about things. The other Old English word, "Bretwalda," just means ruler of Britain.
