A "Thing" was a gathering of local yarls, leaders and spiritual leaders to discuss events, judge crimes and solve disputes. Essentially what would be a political meeting in modern times, but no elections, haha! I love that you pick up on the big complexity with Ketil. We've seen him as a kind man, but he still owns slaves. He wants the most peaceful answer to a conflict, but he buckles from the pressure of those around him, and from the culture, and takes the violence into his own hands. Pities himself while breaking the body of a child. Y'all are on point on the analysis! Good reaction to one of the most harrowing episodes of anime.

A thing is an assembly of sorts for people with power. Though medieval, the name is still used today. "Stortinget" or "the Great Thing" as Parliament of Norway for example.

Yeah, I see where you're coming from: the comparison between Thors and Ketil is one you want to make but it's kind of hard to verbalize. Thors basically said "putting down the sword is something I MUST do." Ketil has always been afraid of picking up the sword in the first place, but still propagated this story of Iron Fist Ketil in the past in order to benefit from the "threat" or "reputation" of the sword. He clearly regrets that now given how fast he moves on from the topic when Thorgil brings it up, but his conscience is guilty for a reason. Thors did things out of principle and resolve, whereas Ketil does them out of fear and anxiety. Even during the deliberation over the children's punishment, he thought to himself "why did you have to steal from ME?" He did feel badly for the kids, but he also warped it into a sort of self-pity at having to take responsibility over what happens on his property. He certainly is one of the "nicer" and more reasonable people on the farm, but what we saw this episode, the nature of his ownership over Arnheid, and his obsession with wealth that Sverkel alluded to hint at his underlying darknesses. I'm glad you girls were able to pick up on some of that, and I'm constantly impressed at how well you analyze these stories.
