Ikado

A perfect definition of pure hatred.

The fact I'm seeing comments now on these threads from two weeks ago is making me very sad.

"How strong of emotions this show brings out of me." "Oh yeah, I don't get it either." OP in a nutshell xD

I think it's as simple as time with these characters. This journey is long and we as viewers/readers are along for the ride so the love we've built for our straw hat crew only continues to grow. Could be wrong though.

I am loving the journey with you two! What is yet to come still makes me emotional.

I've been waiting for this Chopper line for the whole arc. He wanted to become human to find friends and now he wants to become a monster for Luffy. It's reminding us about his tragic past, but the more important part is that Chopper is happy now and that is so beautiful. I love Chopper and him saying this, seeing him happy, makes me happy! :)

Before I started One Piece, I had already been spoiled on many of the big villains of the series, and when I got to Fishman Island, I was surprised to see a main villain I'd never heard of before. Most of the arc, I was convinced he'd be replaced with an even bigger villain or something like that. But when I got to the reveal, it made so much sense. Hordy is not a character, he is a tragedy. He is the outcome of the failure of a society and culture

Apples represent knowledge so it's him digesting the hateful narratives around as a child and consuming them into his ideology

Sometimes the pacing of this show is just about right.

A very different kind of "nothing happened" here. None of the character and substance of Zoro's version is in Hody's version of "nothing happened" (ok, Hody actually said "nothing" but it's close enough). Hody essentially just looked up to Arlong's hatred of humans and fueled that hatred in himself to beyond even Arlong's level of hatred! But then, we have Luffy, inspiring the fishpeople to rise up against the prejudices they feel towards humans! They've placed their trust in him and they're ready to move forward. It's beautiful to see 🥹🥹🥹

I find Hordy's backstory or lack thereof very interesting. The danger that hate wants to exist and grow is very real and dangerous. Hate isn't happy with remaining stagnate it wants to grow and justification. This type of character could have been told poorly a thousand different ways. I think Oda did better than anyone else could, without putting too much of the real world into Hordy's character.

Big Dog Jake

All I got from Hody’s backstory was that he got a balanced diet as a child with that apple 😆

Your comments about real-life lessons are so true. Since getting into anime, I've found myself getting far less annoyed or angry with the people around me, because you just don't know sometimes what has happened in their lives to make them feel or think a certain way. Many other mediums like dramas or books do the same thing, of course, but not like anime does it. Thinking WWLD (What Would Luffy Do) has stopped at least one bar fight in the world, and that's what makes anime special to me.

Inherited will is among the biggest themes of the show, but this arc really shows that inherited will can just as easily be used for evil as it can for good. As children, it's difficult to choose what we inherit because our minds are so impressionable at a young age, but as adults we have the freedom and ability to filter what we will pass along to those who look to us for guidance. One of our biggest responsibilities as human beings is that we choose the right things to pass on. And no one will have a perfect understanding of what is "right," but the best chance that we have is to go out and see the world. Experience as many cultures as possible, trying not to be confined to just our own insulated home environments. Then take all that experience and concentrate it into as pure an essence of "right" as you can. And know that the journey never ends! Our growth as people does not stop unless we willingly allow ourselves to stagnate; just keep on refining that essence over the years. That's why stories and themes like this will always be timeless, always be relevant.

All One Piece it's about how we can be better people. In the first episode Luffy didn't buy the history told about zoro be a demon. It's all about that. "Be curious, not judgmental" (please react Ted Lasso girls.)

It is sad, how realistic is Hordy as a villain. People just don't like him, because they don't want to see that this is how real evil looks like most of the time. I liked it first when some villain got interesting stories, and we've been made to understand them, and see them from a different prespective. But we don't need to portray every villain like that. We need to realize, that there are villains beyond saving. We need more evil villains in some stories, and not just the missunderstood / misstreated poor little bad guys.

Maybe people don't like him, because he reminds them of themselves. A lot of people have this type of hatred towards other people or even races and they don't even know why. Personally the only thing I don't like is the pills. That kinda ruins the whole group for me. We all knew Arlong was way stronger than Luffy, so somebody who trained even more for those years could've been the reason why he is that strong. But now they are just madmen popping pills.

DaveJin

Yes. Oda is truly truly truly a genius. <3

Ngl i was cringing when the 'identity' of Hordy was revealed, coz I really wouldve prefered the theories you guys cooked up.

PuffyFish605

This is why a lot of people didn't like Hordy as a villain - because he didn't have a very interesting motivation for hating humans. Personally, I like the whole "physical manifestation of hatred" thing that they did with Hordy.
