It seems both Einar and Thorfinn struggle with living and finding reason to. Thorfinn is obvious, but consider Einar: His mom told him to live and he keeps telling it to himself, but then he goes and potentially sacrifices his life for someone he met a few months ago. Is it because he's just that selfless? Or does he still struggle justifying suffering just to live and see this as not only a way to help someone, but also end the suffering? It's very well-written to leave you wondering like this.

Fighting Askeladd was what Thorfinn was living for and it was taken from him. Living without purpose is a miserable place to be in.
