the honorifics used by Luffy and Law here are kinda interesting. Luffy calls Law "Tora-o" (the Japanese pronunciation of Trafalgar is Torafalgar) so he's shortening it to the first two syllables and adding o. the "o" honorific roughly translates to "guy" so Tra-guy is an accurate translation, though some translations use Traffy instead to emphasize how childish the nickname is. Tora-o can be also be translated as "Tiger-guy" which I like, it's cute lol. Law calls Luffy "Straw Hat-ya" with the "ya" honorific being, well not explicitly rude it's not really polite either. much of Japanese is contextual and if you don't know the person it's not really rude, but if you do know the person and have a familiar relationship it's actually pretty rude. it's used to refer to a person as their job rather than as a person, the actual common use would be calling Farmer John "farmer-ya" instead of using their actual name with an appropriate honorific. it creates distance between the speaker and the person. it immediately makes it clear that Law keeps everyone at arms length without having to say it outright. additionally Law is using this honorific in silly situations. It makes sense in certain use cases but Law uses -ya in situations where it genuinely makes no sense. It should be used when refereeing to a person as their profession, but lmfao Straw-Hat-ya does not make sense. Luffy does not make straw hats. calling him Straw-Hat-ya does not make any sense. Law is just that committed to distancing himself from people that that he is more than willing to distort the logical usage of -ya to ensure that nobody thinks that they are close to him. he's just a brat honestly and I love him for that
