Interesting fact - the Air Force or similar would have scrambled a jet to fly alongside the plane if contact was lost, with the express purpose of shooting it down if it looked to crash in a populated area. Jets were scrambled for flight FS2004 (which killed golfer Payne Stuart) and Air Helios flight 522. Both ended crashing themselves (it turned out both had been depressurised accidentally) but fighter jets had to follow just in case. There is no way this flight would have even made out of culver city airspace, transponder or no. I don't know why I wrote this, sorry.
