Dude, I looked up Jeffery Jones, and what a bummer. Didn't know about all the bad shit he was into.
Yeah, it kinda pairs well with Top Gun in that sense. I was imagining a Top Gun-esque scene happening before the crash landing. Buncha anxious flyboys in warplanes buzzing each other can't be sustainable.

When the airplane crashes on the deck of the aircraft carrier, it’s to illustrate the heightening of the stakes as the story moves into its 3rd act. Right after the crash, Fred Thompson says something like “it’s out of control, out of control and we’ll be lucky to live through it”. It’s implied that the seas are stormy and rough and fighters wouldn’t be scrambled in such conditions unless there was a threat of war.
