Reading "Children of Ash and Elm," a history of the Vikings, which is fascinating and, at times, utterly appalling in its descriptions of the many brutalities of the era. Fascinating insights on the ibn Fadlan description of the long funeral ceremony.

I've been picking up any Willeford books I can after enjoying Cockfighter. Next one I found was Pick-Up, which was a dark depressing slog (2 people being alcoholics and wanting to kill themselves for a hundred or so pages), but it ended with what he must of thought was a HUGE TWIST in 1955, when it's revealed in the second to last sentence that the guy we've been following the whole book is actually a black guy! Mind blowing stuff. The last three sentences: "I left the shelter of the awning and walked up the hill in the rain. Just a tall, lonely Negro. Walking in the rain. The End" idk I really felt like Willeford was pleased with himself for that "twist ending" and it made me laugh quite a bit. Other than that Pick-Up's very skippable but Cockfighter truly is a great and quick read.
