When they Boyz are talking about The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad, and are just fanboying out, it is everything I wanted. I watched this last weekend with my fiancée and her 13 y/o daughter and they chuckled MAYBE a masculine of times. I’ve seen dozens of times, and I’m laughing like a crazy person. This movie works as well as it does because the main core are dramatic actors doing comedy, but ALL playing straight. That’s an incredible thing missing in most comedies these days- they’re too self-aware and not earnest enough.

Pretty sure Brennaman was referring to Minneapolis with that slur. The Reds were playing the Royals during that broadcast and they had just finished a series with the Twins. Two prominent gay bars are within blocks of Target Field on Hennepin Avenue, and near several hotels. There’s also a predominantly black strip club on the corner, so at least he showed some restraint I guess.

I work at Fox Sports on weekends and if its a NCAA or NFL game there are clean line feeds coming in where you get to hear the announcers chat during the commercial breaks and what not. Even when the announcers know they're not on air they know people are listening. The fact that Thom Brennaman would feel so comfortable to say anything remotely bad indicates to me he had to have been saying shit like that for a long time and lots of producers and randoms just looked the other way about it. This is all pretty obvious but any on air talent knows that they should assume that as long as they're mic'd up you're going to have a hot mic that could be going out to everyone. Now I've heard people like Terry Bradshaw tell maybe an off colored joke or some announcer mention an attractive woman but nothing that would rise to the level of immediate firing like Brennaman. I did hear Bradshaw say though and I don't know if this is true but he was saying off air that he made 500k for his appearance on The Masked Singer a couple years ago.

Anecdote about refs yelling strike and having their own hand motions/style: When I was a janitor, my supervisor was an NCAA baseball umpire as well. I asked him about it and sure enough they each put their own spin on calling ball, strike, safe, and out. His particular style of calling a strike was more like “STAAAAAAHCK” and outs were “PAHHHHW” along with aggressive gesturing. He said that was done so other umpires knew by ear who was making a call, helping them know if they should back up the call or disagree with it.
