One of George Macdonald Fraser's Flashman novels (a strong recommendation) contains a very detailed description of the university dueling equipment and practices, which included the prohibition of stabbing attacks and elaborate facial/head protection to limit scars to the favored areas of cheeks, jaw and brow.

19th C English comic writer Jerome K. Jerome went deep into German academic fencing in his book Three Men on the Bummel. Sounds brutal. "The whole interest is centred in watching the wounds. This movie was great. I didn't mind all the walking around at all. When you're infiltrating an enemy town/castle disguised as a Nazi officer, just walking around is risky and suspenseful. Has anyone read any of the spy novels by Alan Furst? They're all set in Europe during WW2 and the years leading up to it. I've only read a couple of them, but they were good. All the intrigue in this movie reminded me of them.
