Speaking of The Insider, I just watched it for the first time and was immediately pulled out of it when Russell Crowe's character just casually mentions that he used to work for Union-Carbide, as if that's a normal company in comparison to the tobacco companies and not a corporation responsible for one of the worst industrial disasters of all time that killed thousands of people? Made me feel crazy. But otherwise a good movie.

That was still the hard cut-off age 20 years ago. I presented to my council's Eagle Board less than a month before I left for college and like 3 months before my 18th birthday; I was so anxious that I was already thinking "Alright it's just a 7-hour round trip between home and college, I'll have two more chances if they don't pass me on the first try and I can make that day trip." (Nailed it in one. Powerpoint and 480p digital video really impressed those old men.)

A la the Bowen Yang convo, I'm curious who the boyz go to for Film criticism these days? I feel like I never read any critics' reviews that are that negative about films anymore? Is this just what film reviews at major publications are like? I remember reading some old Pauline Kael reviews that really picked apart movies but when I read the occasional review from NYT it all feels positive or at worst neutral?

One of my favorite newer metal bands called Contention uses the sound clip at the end of their song 'Legalize Everything and Let God Sort Them Out' from this movie. Gabrus/Rogers mentions a few times that the quotes in this movie would go well with some toxic masculinity patreon dude. Instead you can slap these quotes on some metal songs and it's tough as hell.

Always meant to watch it and the dueling banjos/squeal like a piggy/purty mouth lines have been around since the 80s, well before the internet and memes. Speaking of THE INSIDER, half the film was shot in my hometown of Louisville, KY the summer of 1998. Unfortunately, I had just moved to Los Angeles, but my friends, my mom and sister were extras in it. One scene that was cut out is a scene with Al Pacino, Russell Crowe, and Hallie Eisenberg (Jesse’s sister) where Russell takes his daughter to a horse riding park in Seneca Park and Al and Russell talk. After they finish their scene, my mom saw Al walk to an older convertible Cadillac with New York plates. My mom told him “nice car” and talked about my dad loving and driving Cadillacs and Al said a PA drove down his Cadillac from NYC to Louisville for him to drive around. That summer people were talking about seeing Al Pacino cruising around in a Cadillac convertible in Louisville, Kentucky on his off days, showing up in coffee shops and posing for photos for their wall.

Def resulted in some very angry conversations with him now that I’ve got a kid. Regarding the Eagle Scout stuff, I was a Boy Scout who was going to try and become an Eagle Scout back in the 2000’s. I actually started to despise Boy Scouts at that point because it became less about going on trips and learning survival techniques and more about getting in good with the scout masters. Even past my dad having to hang out with these guys, who were duller than dishwater, I also just never wanted to have to have anything to do with them haha. Around 13/14 I felt like I had to become one of the boys and be buddy buddy with them to even be considered for merit badges. I used to try and fulfill the requirements for badges with the minimum amount of people required to be there and when it was time for any kind of test or review they would just grill me and move the goalposts until I’d give up on that badge. Really became so gatekept and insular that the only guys who made Eagle Scout were the weird milquetoast kiss-ass kind of kids lol. One of them was having such a hard time becoming an ES that his dad just became a Scout Leader to help him.

I've started to just leave when it comes to Q&A time after I went to that Blaze Foley doc and his wife answered questions after. Some dude asked a question that was so fucking stupid it broke me. Like we just watched this entire emotional movie and the guy didn't realize Blaze was actually dead irl at the end and his WIDOW had to explain it to this fucking moron. The whole crowd like sighed how stupid the question was and I just got up and left.

I was all set to interview John Boorman about this film in February at his home for a documentary on the figure of the hillbilly in horror. Sadly (but understandably), his assistant got worried a few weeks before we were set to go there and we had to conduct the interview online. I member reading two separate anecdotes about Burt's experiences on set. One was that he insisted on doing a stunt where he was swept down river. John Boorman said they should use a dummy instead. But Burt had his way and was injured too. Afterwards Boorman said that the footage of Burt looked like a dummy been swept away. Ouch. The second anecdotes is that Burt claimed that in the infamous "squeal like a pig scene" the actor who was playing the hillbilly crossed the line and almost raped Ned Beatty for real. But luckily Burt intervened and broke it up. Frankly that sounds like utter bullshit but Burt is going to Burt.

The final two scenes of this film (with the arm emerging from the water) terrified me. Jon Voight jolting awake in bed from the nightmare as his wife tries to comfort him. It’s like he will never be free from that river. Gives me chills just thinking about it today.
