When I was a callow youth in the early 90s working as a librarian, a co-worker (sweet Indian kid) asked me for a more interesting type of film rec as he knew I was a big movie nut. Something other than a mainstream blockbuster. David Lynch was huge for me at the time so I suggested trying Blue Velvet. When I came in to work on monday morning I was called into the manager’s office, she was furious. Wanted to know wtf I had been thinking - the kid had watched the movie with his WHOLE FAMILY. Grandparents, little kids, aunts and uncles. All gathered round with their samosas and snacks for movie night. ‘Baybee wants to fuuuuuuck….’

1- one of the dvd releases of blue velvet includes ebert’s very negative review. It’s worth watching even if he’s wrong 2- there’s a theater in the boston area upon which lynch serves as “a board member,” which is really just an honorary thing not a big deal…. But when this theater was facing the very real possibility of closure, lynch allowed them to do a “premiere” of inland empire, did some q&a’s, provided his branded coffee to sell, and allowed the theater to keep all the money. Cool shit!
