Drive-bys were in the zeitgeist in the 90s for sure. My dad grew up in the Barrio East LA, and took my mom (pregnant with me) to visit his parents. When they were leaving a car came by a shot up the house two doors over. My (white suburban) mom freaked out while my dad stopped to make sure his old neighbors were ok. My mom was not happy at all.
