It’s truly amazing how emotionally poignant these episodes are despite River Song’s story not having played out yet.

Oh no, is this explained in a future episode? I thought it was something that was explained in classic Who and I just wasn't aware. I didn't know we'd be told about it in the future 😔

Patrick Armbruster

hm. saying something isn't a spoiler while containing information the reactor hasn't seen yet in the show seems quite silly to me. "isn't a spoiler" is not like a magic spell that makes it so. ;)

I'm Inevitable

A little back story that isn't a spoiler, when a Gallifreyen graduates from timey whimey university and becomes a bona-fide time lord (like becoming a Phd) they have to choose a new name that they will be known as from then on. The reason for this is that time lords have historic powerful enemies that can use their name against them to harm and defeat them. Don't ask how because I never understood that part. Hence "Doctor". All timelords have a new alternate name. The only reason the Doctor would ever tell anyone his real name was to demonstrate his complete confidence and trust in them. Maybe love as well. He's saying " I trust you with my life ".

The confusion you experience with the Doctor of the future leaving the screwdriver for his past self is just natural. It's one of the main possible paradoxes when it comes to thinking about time-travel, it's called bootstrap paradox. Doctor Who sometimes uses it but the show is also so inconsistent in the rules of time-travel, time re-writing and so on. It is absolutely ok not to understand or overthink it. Actually I very soon accepted said inconsitency in order to enjoy the show. In other movies or books it really annoys me if the rules of time-travel are changed throughout one story. (Like in Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban - arrgh, I really hate how Hermione goes on about how important it is that they don't meet their former selves because that would change their present but just a few moments later Harry encounters a bootstrap paradox that enables him to conjur up the Patronus)

Just you wait.... there will be tears in the future. But I still think Buffy and Angel hits deeper (sometimes). Sadness in Doctor Who often is more.... beautiful?

Agreed!! I am still so at awe how deep and emotional this show can be! I never expected it to be... It's just wonderful. And can ruin my day in the blink of an eye 🤣

I think this series is my favourite so far. Donna and the Doctor have just been amazing!

And here's where you find the true brilliance of this show. It's often silly and cheesy and light-hearted - but there's so much depth to the Doctor that you can't help but fall in love with him and feel his pain on the rare occasions that he lets it show. This two-parter is truly great - the Vashta Nerada are terrifying, there's fun times and tragic deaths, and River hints at so much that may be yet to come. Ultimately it shows that while the Doctor doesn't always succeed, he is a powerful force for good in the universe and a universe without him would be so much emptier and lonelier.

Awesome two parter! I had to wait for both to be released before watching 'cause there was no way I could wait a week haha. Very excited for the next episode, too!
