I agree that abandonment is Buffy's fear. Her conversation with her mom about her father no longer in their lives, Parker's obvious behavior and, of course, Angel/Angelus after their lovemaking in season 2. I also found that Buffy and Willow's exchange about 50/50 spells and faces to be atypical of their usual relationship. Although we might attribute it to the influence of the demon possessed house, the conversation doesn't seem to be about any expressed fears they might be feeling, more like unwarranted sniping and reaction. Or it might be foreshadowing......

This is a fun episode. And we get some insight into the different characters. Xander is scared of being left behind and forgotten. Oz of losing control over the wolf and Willow over the magic. And Anya's first thought when she sees something is wrong is "Xander". And then there's Giles with a chainsaw.

I completely understand your worry with Anya with Xander. I felt it too when I first was watching this show, back when I was all of 14 at the time it aired. But the second she walked up in a full on bunny costume, it disarmed me against her.

I've always took Buffy's fear in this episode as being abandoned by her friends and being forced to be the slayer with nothing to ground her to a normal life. We do know being the slayer means living a short life from the season 3 episode "Helpless", so your interpretation of her fear being dying also fits I suppose.

I loved her costume! I'm definitely warming up to Anya. At first, I was mostly worried for Xander and if he ever upset her, then she might know a few punishments haha... But she's lovely!
