What a wonderful reaction! So much fan service was expertly woven into this episode, both for those who have seen New-Who so far (doctors 8 thru 11) and for classic who fans. For me David Tennant's "I don't want to go" was amazing but for a different reason. I hated that line in his original regeneration, it came off as whiney and childish. For me this was a redo, and it came off perfect, and then Matt Smith "he always says that" tied the two together to make it all OK. For those interested, there is an awesome fan made video called "Gallifrey Stands" that I'll link to. It has SLIGHT spoilers that I'll mention in a non-spoilery way so you can decide whether to watch the video. It's an awesome remake of that culminating scene when all the doctors get together to rescue Gallifrey, but instead of tiny clips it uses extended clips and even has the doctors all talking to each other, and weaves in perfectly with the 50th anniversary plot. The slight SPOILER is that instead of just including the forehead of the upcoming 13th doctor, it includes extremely brief clips of a couple of upcoming doctors. So if you already know what the next couple of doctors look like I would say it's fine to watch but make your own decision before deciding whether to click. This episode brings back fond memories. It was broadcast on the 50th anniversary of Dr Who and was on at the cinema here in the UK but that day also happened to be my daughters 16th birthday. She had a Dr Who themed birthday, with a Tardis cake which included my daugter as a girl made out of fondant coming out of the Tardis with the label The Impossible Girl. We ended the day with a trip to the cinema to watch this episode, with her and her friends dressed up as Dr Who characters. My daughter was David Tenant, but there was also a Christopher Eccleston, a Tom Baker, a Matt Smith and an Amy Pond who had the markings on her skin from how many times she had seen the Silence. And then the episode ends with a cameo from the actual Tom Baker who is my favourite Doctor. It was a perfect day

I haven't watched Adventure yet, to be honest I'm not sure when is the right time. I also feel that I've not seen enough of Classic Who and maybe I should wait?

When Steven Moffat was asked in a Doctor Who Magazine interview to nominate his three "greatest triumphs" from his era, the second one he picked was this episode, and rightly so. For him to somehow cope with all the behind the scenes pressures and sky-high expectations of the 50th anniversary and ultimately deliver an episode that works so beautifully was an incredible feat. The first triumph he picked, by the way, was The Eleventh Hour -- the only episode that faced possibly even more pressure than the anniversary special, and succeeded brilliantly at immediately establishing Matt Smith as the Doctor. The third triumph is an episode you haven't reached yet... It's a less obvious choice than the other two, but I agree completely with Moffat's reasoning -- he called it the most difficult script he'd ever written, and you'll soon understand why when you see it. No spoilers, but I'm really looking forward to your reaction to that one... :-)
