Doctor Who 7x01 Asylum of the Daleks
🕑 Added 2025-02-05 20:00:11 +0000 UTCWe have started off series 7 with a BANG! A very solid start, I must say. The Daleks were very cool in this one (back to the older design, I see) and actually scarier than I've seen them for a while.
There is a minisode available (which I didn't watch before watching this episode) and I think it explains a bit more about Amy and Rory. The minisodes are not crucial, so don't worry if you've not seen it either! They should be available on Youtube though if you want to check it out. I think of them as a little dessert enjoyed after a meal... or before, in some cases!
I really enjoyed this episode. Oswin is incredible - so darn smart. She is a delight. Can't say much more here due to spoilers, but I really enjoyed her character.
Oh! One more thing. I've had many comments telling me to watch the Doctor Who movie as I am in series 7 (I'm guessing there is a reference somewhere) so I finally made time for it this week. I didn't react to it, but just enjoyed it on my own time. I liked it! It was fun to see the 8th Doctor, and a little bit of the real 7th Doctor, too. Quite different to what I have seen in New Who, but I'm glad to have seen it and hopefully I can remember or recognise whatever reference it is ๐คฃ

The one thing I could do without in this episode. I'm not overly worked up about it. It's just perhaps indicative of our double standard culture we've been socially conditioned to accept and challenge less. Amy's mild spousal abuse towards Rory. This isn't the first instance of this either. His comments, and the odd flinching moment have been a running gag. She Slaps him a couple of times in this episode. He's a big lad, he'll be fine, and let's not escalate it into a massive thing. Like their relationship is toxic and wave our big red flags. But playing this stuff for laughs, which unfortunately you were drawn on, is just a little disappointing to see. Amy later slaps Rory at the height of her emotional response to what he was saying about her love for him. This is not the same situation, neither does it draw the same reaction. Which is more understandable than the random annoyance slap she gives him earlier in the episode. We can all be grown ups and acknowledge that wouldn't play the same with reverse roles. Hardly an exclusive thing either. I was never overly pleased with all the slaps The Doctor has had in the past. Just that one from Amy in this episode stands out as completely unprovoked and is more symbolic of how she has treated him at times.

Don't worry about missing the minisodes, I saw all this when it originally aired and had no idea they were a thing! Saw them all years later lol I never understood why they don't just make the minisodes part of the actual episodes lol But yeah don't worry you weren't the only one who missed them!

A FEW Lorne dreams you say. Was he signing to you by any chance? Or maybe there was a duet! Not a recent one but I have actually had a dream where you made an appearance. No, not one of THOSE dreams, it was all innocent and above board ๐ The details are fuzzy but I remember that my brother and I were some sort of private detective duo and for some unknown reason we were searching for someone in Australia. Your involvement was to basically drive us around and point out places of interest. That's right, you were our chauffeur & tour guide! ๐ (I do tend to watch your videos right before bedtime so that's likely how your presence came about)

there are no spoilers in this comment! i seriously adore series 7 sooo much. i've noticed it's a lot of people's least favourite so i'm curious to see what you'll think when you've finished it! i love oswin so much, she's one of my favourite characters in the whole show. i hope you enjoy series 7!

haha exactly! That part made me so nervous ๐ฐ

The Darleks saying, "It is known that the Doctor requires companions." is probably my favorite line in Doctor Who. Also, what was Rory expecting to find when he was up close and spinning the eyestock around? He's too seasoned an adventurer to be that bad at sneaking around the Asylum of the Darleks.

They've been hounding me for a little while now! I even have had a few weird Lorne dreams!!

I think I was thinking of the Penguin ๐คฃ

Funny that you mentioned you keep thinking Oswald when talking about Oswin as Oswald is her surname so maybe it just stuck in your unconscious. I love this episode. A strong start to the series.

A really great episode but I was really pissed off that they've broken up Amy and Rory just to get a beautiful reconciliation scene. I mean the "giving up" thing might be believable for a normal couple but for those two after all they went through? Didn't believe it for a second. Beautiful nevertheless.

You as well? I also had very weird dreams last night! Maybe it's contagious!! ๐

Thank you, Rhys! They've really set the bar high with this episode!

It was SHOCKING to see what happened with poor Amy and Rory. I will NOT allow their marriage to break apart ๐ญ๐ญ Thank goodness they seem to have worked it out, even though I wouldn't have minded more emotional scenes ๐คช

OOH thank you, Neil! If I can take a wild guess, maybe it's about Amy and Rory's marriage... but hmm yes, I will give myself a day off from the comments ๐คญ It was a brilliant episode! The Daleks were probably the best I've seen them and I loved the atmosphere. It's just getting better and better. The ending was SHOCKING and I never saw that coming. The poor girl. She's so lovely, so smart, and so beautiful ๐ญ I hope you have a great evening, Neil! Sleep well and don't have any weird dreams like I did last night ๐คฃ๐

Spoilers but opinion-only Enthusiasm! A lot of people are keen to write off se7 but it boasts a lot of underrated episodes that I agree are pretty solid. There's imo maybe 2 actual full clunkers and character evolution that could have been better but it catches itself on, and when it does it does so in five star. You know what I mean!

Since you didn't do the minisodes I wondered what you'd make about Amy and Rory (and the reason for their split), as well as the big twist about Oswin at the end (and how they foreshadowed it). There seemed to be a lot for you to enjoy and I do like it when you laugh at something. This episode at least tried to do something different with the Daleks (rather hard to do after almost 50 years by that point), though I don't think all of it worked, like the idea that Daleks have a Parliament and Prime Minister (which only ever comes up in this episode, as far as I remember), while the Dalek puppets are disturbing (especially when they reveal themselves). Also, an insane Dalek seems a bit redundant given what they're normally like ;)

Hi Juliette. Great episode right!? Just a quick warning, when you make make this reaction public you'll likely get a few people dropping spoilers of some kind in the YouTube comments section so it might be a good idea to avoid them for a day or so to give your mods time to remove any. (Unless you already know what I'm referring to of course. If not I'll remind you again before it goes public). Thanks for another great reaction and I hope you have a lovely day ๐

Season 7 is my favourite. Love your reactions. When one is over I find myself counting the days to the next lol ๐
