In 2D "Japanese style" games, it is not a problem, because the dev. just will change some eyes, hair and mouth and the character stays in the same damn place. Some pseudo 3D games are the same... the character just stays in the same place with some background and it is not part of the 3D environment. This is the "easy and simple" you mention about. These games can change the character 1000 times with no problems. SimpleDays is full 3D with depth of field. The character is part of the environment - depth of field, lighting and reflection etc. and I have to re-render the whole scene. You can't just replace part of the character. Oh, I forgot to say, ... if the character never goes back to visit old places of the story, you also can change the character. But Maria will go to work. Anna will keep the old bedroom... If I want to use the old places, I have to re-render them.

you do know that you can have them get a new hair style at "x" point in their stories and make it part of their story instead of redoing it for the whole game? kind of like, new house... new look. or family is all here, time for a new look for the wedding? if you had updated the model to a new Generation then yes i could see the whole game change. As for something as simple as a hair style change, not so much. I know some girls change their hair style/ color every few months.

And that's how dlc is born. Main project gets finished, cosmetic changes can happen at your desired pace without it affecting you negatively
