It's actually just a pronunciation thing. Japanese speak from further back in their mouth, so they don't use their tongue as much when speaking like we do in English. Just try saying L without moving your tongue, that's the real culprit here

by the way, the reason why the name sounds like Bruno when they said Bluno was because Japanese regard L and R as the same letter. so thats also why when they say Luffy it sounds like Ruffy
