Steam and Patreon with Hunt and Snare
Hunt and Snare is primarily developed through funding on Patreon. Steam Early Access on it's own does not support the development itself (generally Early Access is just a fraction of a fraction of what full games can sell on Steam), but rather allows us to contract work from outside the core team (e.g. a dedicated writer, 2D artist, level designer, sounds and music from a composer, and so forth).
While Steam and Patreon builds are identical to each other, the unstable early builds (Gold Cohort or above) are released 2 weeks prior the main release. The unstable builds are also downloadable via Steam through a Betas key.
Raw explanation:
- Patreon and Steam build: Always up to date and the newest stable build.
- Unstable build: This is a testing build released 2 weeks prior Patreon and Steam release. It is unstable and may contain unexpected bugs and jinks. Downloadable on ItchIo or Steam via Betas key.
Accessing the Unstable build on Steam
Each Hunt and Snare Unstable release comes with a Steam “beta password” (sent to Gold Cohorts and above). This will allow you to download the Unstable Patreon release on Steam if you own the game on Steam. It is a fairly straightforward process.
Once you have bought Hunt and Snare on Steam, you can right click on the Hunt and Snare name in your 'LIBRARY', select 'Properties', click the 'BETAS' tab, paste the password into the 'Enter beta access code to unlock private betas' field, and then click 'Check Code'. If the code is correct, the drop down menu will now have the new Unstable build. Once selected, Steam will automatically update Hunt and Snare's Unstable build for you.
Raw explanation:
- Right click on 'Hunt and Snare' in your Steam 'LIBRARY' and click Properties: This will open up a new dialog to change some settings related to Steam and Hunt and Snare.
- Click the 'BETAS' tab on top of the Hunt and Snare properties: This will allow you to opt into specific Unstable builds on the day they’re released. You can also opt out of Hunt and Snare “beta” releases here, and just wait for the main Steam release(s).
- Paste Steam “beta password” into the field and click 'CHECK CODE': The Steam “beta password” will be included in every new Unstable build post on Patreon.
- Click on the drop down box and select the newest build: Steam will now switch your build to match the Unstable build you used the Steam “beta password” from.
- To switch back to the main Steam build: Go to the same drop down box in the 'BETAS' tab, and select 'NONE'. Your build will now update automatically with the regular Steam releases.
Censoring on Steam
Hunt and Snare, is not censored anywhere in game. The version on Steam is just as uncensored and porny as the Patreon version.
There are no uncensor patches nor any fiddling with files required.
Raw explanation:
- Steam build: The Steam build is fully uncensored.
Can I somehow hide what I'm playing on Steam?
Sadly not. This is a feature that has been requested by many over the years, but Valve hasn't allowed it. Maybe one day Valve will allow that on Steam, but today is not the day. Fear not!
For here is a solution and option!
You can create a new account on Steam for free, and then use that account to store your adult games (such as Hunt and Snare) hidden away from your family and friends! Steam allows you to quite easily switch between accounts, and purchase NSFW games on the safe account.
Changing between accounts, once you have your NSFW account, is done via the Steam Client and from the top menu. Click Steam and then Change Account... from the sub menu <3

You need to change the information about hiding the game. Now there does exist a "Mark a private button" that does exactly what you said is impossible... By the way, why is the itch.io build still there, but it seems that it has not been an update for a long time... Why?

Hi! We only have betas when we have a build approaching release. The comment was referring to having a steam key redeems for Patrons when Hunt and Snare was released on Steam ^^

Bumping a super old post (don't even know if this'll be seen), but the beta tab doesn't exist on my Steam copy of Hunt and Snare. Is that what "Not anymore I'm afraid. It was phased out quite a while ago ^^" is referring to?

Unless there's some fine print i didn't read somewhere, but so far I haven't had anyone point anything out to me lol

Heya! You only need the code for a week or two after the release, and then you can just switch branches for the build ^^

Hello! Patreon shows your total lifetime pledge(s) at 8 usd; The threshold for receiving a Steam key is 30 usd ^^

Same price on full release! You'll need to go to your settings and enable "adult content" or "sexual content" (I don't remember what it is called now!). The link in the Patreon post should take you to the Steam page, and you can then sign in on browser ^^

This is sadly a question that is very hard to answer to, because the only proof I have is my own mindset. I personally pledge to a lot of games on Patreon, and I've seen the effect you describe, and I understand how frustrating it can be (and is). I have worked on games industry before, mostly indie studios though, and I've worked on games for Steam, iOS, and PSN and seen how the stores function, and my experience with Patreon (since early 2017) has been far superior than anything else in the eight years prior to Patreon; The feedback and the interaction with patrons and public players, is just insanely inspiring and fun, and I don't personally see myself just "ignoring" this platform. The Patreon is our "long term goal", making games beyond just Hunt and Snare with fans, where as the function of Steam is primarily to expand our reach. Obviously we aren't going to ignore Steam either, but Steam is effectively less about the community, and more about the game, where as Patreon is more evenly about community and the game. Also, as you've played the public release when we started, I hope Hunt and Snare feels and looks a lot better now! I know a lot of people disliked the hybrid faces we started with x)

You will be able to buy Hunt and Snare on Steam, but I don't have an exact date yet, but next month most likely ^^
Timothy
Okay, forgive me if you already answer this. Are we able to buy the game from the Steam Store soon? Or do we have to become a patreon?
Ruffleneck
Awh, I hope your situation is better now! <3

It's awesome that you're game will be available on steam. I also figured out why I wasn't able to access the patreon build for the game, I forgot that a couple months back I had to suspend most of the patreon accounts I was supporting due to a lack of funds
