I saw this when it was in theaters. It's fun, and visually inventive, but falls short of its ambitions. Also: Film cameras do not count down. They start at 1 and go UP until you reach the number of shots on the roll (24 or 36 usually).

In addition to the 1930’s movie serial imagery others have mentioned, a lot of the aesthetic, camera angles, and robot designs from “Sky Captain” are taken directly from the 1941-43 Max Fleischer Superman animated shorts, specifically “The Mechanical Monsters” episode.
