Hahaha - sounds like Star Trek crossed with Hitchhikers Guide. Some of those old pulp stories were great - def part of the inspo for this one.

I am trying to remember the pulp short story when we do come up against weakly godlike entities who pluck our ship out of hyperspace and demand that we answer their questions. To which the response, in the face of awful punishment and annihilation, is: “Who wants to know?”

Thank you Shawn! First and foremost it’s the idea that intelligent life throughout the universe is hostile, and all of it is staying quiet in case there’s something even more hostile out there! And it’s also a book by Liu Cixin, I believe!
