Episodes like this one are one of the main reasons I love sci-fi in general and Star Trek in particular. Telling stories that might be set in the future and/or another planet, but speak to real world, contemporary social and political issues.

I don't know if Paula mentioned it but episode 9 was the last Star Trek to air in the 80s. Episode 10 aired January 1st, 1990 and everything between now and the last couple of seasons of Voyager will be lovely 1990s-era Trek.

An episode ending with the storming of a Capitol building. Boy, that sure is some awkward timing... Be careful, there's an EPISODE of TNG also called 'First Contact." Every TNG movie takes place after the series. Generations takes place in the third series of DS9, First Contact during season 5 of DS9 and Season 3 of Voyager, Insurrection (YIKES) takes place during Season 7 of DS9 and season 5 of Voyager and Nemesis takes place after Voyager. Here is a full list of Star Trek in Chronological order. It includes the new era of Star Trek as well, if that's a plus or negative for anyone. Obviously a prisoner escaped. Very expertly I might add. But it's also about how those in power try to escape from their responsibility. We did this thing, and then we decided not to deal with it. We let the people decide. We aren't going to deal with the consequences of our previous actions. We'll ask the Federation for help. We didn't decide how to deal with this situation, the 'people' did. And along comes Picard to FORCE them to face their responsibilities and the consequences of their actions. Danar is a counterpoint, because he is HAUNTED by the consequences of the actions he took. he killed 84 times and each one will stick with him forever. (I also appreciate how EVERY death a character faces is given weight and concequence, not just throw away action. Casualties MATTER. To everyone. Media of today has gotten too cavalier with this aspect of entertainment, killing for spectacle. And characters feeling justified and unremorseful about doing so and treated as heroes for it with no reflection at all and often REWARDED for it. It's kinda sick if you actually think about it instead of just soaking it in)

The funny thing about this episode is that it’s now relevant in many ways, I.e as a Brit hearing but the people had a referendum makes me roll my eyes and hope that guy fought back 😂😂😂

Large dichotomy from ST fans about Picard but I loved it. Written with today's TV taste in mind and frankly gives some flavor to a somewhat vanilla universe TNG sometimes feels.

There was 4 TNG movies. First Contact was the 2nd. The first was "Generations". Both, I believe took place after the last season of TNG. No spoilers, but, "Generations" has part of the original series cast. I hope there's a reaction to those movies🤞🤞

I won't say anything more than what Paula has said because I don't want to spoil anything, but James Cromwell's role in Star Trek: First Contact is my favorite role of his PERIOD (Star Trek or not). I love Picard's line at the end of this episode about how their society was about to undergo a lot of development in the next few minutes. Fantastic.

This is definitely one of those gems that doesn't get enough attention. I have a list of TNG episodes I rewatch periodically and this is one of them. The general theme of caring for veterans is still relevant today. We "support the troops" and then we do little for them when they come home.

Yep, I’ve always dug this episode. As a fan of the military and what they risk for us, I really enjoy episodes of shows that I watched that dealt with them. I was born in ‘82 and most of the shows of the 80’s and even 90’s dealt with the after effects of Vietnam. James Cromwell lives in my county in NY and he’s pretty active socially. I think the word Paula was searching for is crawl space. There were 4 TNG movies, but most of us only acknowledge 3. You’re not going to be able to watch First Contact until after the series is done with. When you get finished with TNG, I highly suggest watching reviews on the movies done by a group called RLM. They review all the movies and it’s very entertaining. Due to recent events, that last scene does take on a bit of a different tone. It’s interesting how real world events can effect your perspective on a TV show from 30 years ago.

Kat, yes James Cromwell has appeared in AHS, as well as several dozens of film and TV roles he's been great in. He is also a big part of The Always Ready For Star Trek players, being in several episodes of a few of the series' as well as a major part in one of the TNG feature films. I've always enjoyed watching him as the warden(?) in The Green Mile.

This is a really underrated 3rd season episode, I think. I suspect it was influenced heavily by "First Blood" (the first "Rambo" movie): In both stories, you have a war veteran who was trained to be the ultimate soldier, but can't function in civilized society. When he's threatened, his survival instinct kicks in and he becomes impossible to catch. And, like in both stories, I think you're not totally sure who you're supposed to root for. I really liked this one.
