"It's almost like Red Nose Day" - it is literally the organization behind Red Nose Day. I'm sure, five months later, there's no way you've already learned this. Certainly not within the video itself. Also, yes, the kind of 'plothole' you identified is a known thing, called a Bootstrap Paradox. Without spoiling anything, the show is aware of this and one day will actually explain the real life logical question. The same paradox lies in like 70% of Moffat's stories, including everyone's favorite. The problem with time travel is that it's impossible, and in a way where the issues become obvious to a lay viewer unless you try very hard (eliminating a lot of the potential without actually fixing the underlying problems to anyone who knows enough), unlike something like FTL travel (impossible for basically the same reasons because it literally is time travel, but this isn't obvious to people unfamiliar with relativity). It isn't a plothole, though, it's a logical paradox. The only reason it's possible to conflate the two is that Doctor Who is not even a little consistent from episode to episode much less overall (has to do with the writing process or lack thereof) so it seems like you're breaking narrative laws rather than those of causality.

That's a really good explanation. Even if you change history, if something has enough temporal mass, you still get to that event, just maybe not by the same route.

Ah the bootstrap paradox. Its the hardest time travel plot to circumvent because of causality. Doctor Who gets around by basically saying that time is actually non-linear and non-subjective. The temporal "mass" of an event has a a "gravity" that pulls in all directions, past and future. Thus a really big event in the future sort of makes itself happen by pulling in everything from its past. If that temporal gravity is too great though you get a fixed point in time- en event so big that no matter what changes you make, it will always happen somehow. At least thats what I've gleaned from the show.

I'm in the same boat as Paula. I notice that some of this time travel stuff doesn't make sense (because events like these need an origin point), but I suspend my disbelief too. I kind of have a feeling (since he's also the one behind Blink) that Moffat cares a lot more about the flow of the story than he does about the plot making perfect sense. And honestly, I'm okay with that. I don't think I'd be okay with it if this were Star Trek, but it works fine for Doctor Who.

Yeah, that's the bootstrap paradox. These were fun mini-sodes but it just gets me more pumped up for The Impossible Astronaut. That's probably one of my favorite Series openers.

Watching these put me in the mind to rewatch my favorite CR/RND edition of Doctor Who from 1999. It had Rowan Atkinson as the Doctor. A fun watch. Katrina, I hope you have seen it. Yep, Red Nose Day and Comic Relief are the same thing. I think it's more that Comic Relief is the charity organization, and Red Nose Day is the event they hold each year.
