I also love the little callback to Kirk's role as officiant at a wedding on TOS ("Balance of Terror"), as well - both he and Picard recite nearly the same speech.(Unfortunately, the TOS wedding has quite a different resolution).

I've seen him in many roles and every time he's slightly out of character, there's a nastiness present. I was wondering if my assessment was legit, as so many people gush about how nice he is in person. Strange disparity!

This was a very popular episode for Data fans and fans who enjoy more character development and "smaller" moments that weren't seen often, or at all. At that point in the show, people were dying for more insight into the everyday lives of the crew, this episode did a good job of that and the B plot was enough to keep things interesting throughout. This is one of the first episodes I saw on TV as a kid and from that moment on I was completely fascinated with Data and remain so.

And the way it seems inherent makes me wonder if that was deliberate by Soong. I mean, the issue with Lore wasn't that he had emotions, but that they led him to being malevolent. Data has an ethical subroutine instead of emotions, and maybe kindness was deliberately programmed into that.

The thing is that this episode is VERY heavy on the world building and fleshing it out, and for many Trek fans, especially back then, part of the appeal WAS the world of Star Trek. Fans wanted to immerse themselves in it and actually live in it. It was their escape. As such there is a DEEP protectiveness towards the world that episodes such as this built. I think the fact that the newer shows have eschewed that kind of narrative style and even major aspects of the world is why many are turned off from them. This episode shows fans what living in this world would be like, and it is appealing, despite the danger presented as well. My one complaint is that, while here, Keiko's emotional responses can seem extreme and wishy-washy, it's only because we're seeing them through the eyes of Data, who does not have a) the whole story of her response, and b) the understanding of those emotions to accurately judge them. The problem arises when she shows up in other non-Data centric stories and retains this characterization. I don't mind Keiko that much personally, but I know her characterization has been a turn off for some, and I think that's why.

I know Katrina didn’t mean any offense when she mentioned that the fake Vulcan ambassador acted similarly to someone with “high-functioning” autism, but I have to point out that describing members of the autistic community as “high-functioning” or “low-functioning” is problematic. I think the link below gives a pretty succinct rundown on the reasons why, but, in a nutshell, that terminology ignores an autistic individual’s unique traits and classifies them as useful or not useful to society by neurotypical standards. I say this with deep respect for the inclusive and diverse Gallifrey Gals fan community you’ve all helped cultivate. Again, I know no offense was intended. Unfortunately, the use of functioning labels to describe autistic individuals is still very common. I love this episode for the following reasons. - Data's face when looking at T'pel in the turbo lift - Data's reaction to the hair color change in the barbers. - Data's face expression during the dancing lessons. (And the whole dancing scene altogether). It's a nice low key episode focusing on a character played by an actor to has great comedic presence.

I can see why you might have wondered if it might not have been well received with elements of the fan base. People seem to like it as far as I have seen. The whole episode is put together so well in every aspect I don't think people even stopped to consider that stuff, just enjoyed the ride. Plus it being from Data's POV makes it more relatable if you have issues with that stuff.

I thought it was great. As Data said, the gift should represent the person giving the gift. It may not cost anything but it is an item that the receiver might not consider getting for themselves. It is a memento of the giver to the receiver. Perhaps a true meaning of a gift than just the monetary value of it.

Adorable episode. But O'Brien, was there a stag night and was Data invited, with a request for him to delete his internal records afterwards? Gotta know. Also Gates McFadden and Data dancing together is just a fantastic piece of physical acting.

This is a lovely episode. I always enjoyed taking deeper dives into the characters daily lives. Also, just wanted to mention, I thought the audio was great this video. I was able to enjoy both the episode and your commentary without even considering the more technical aspects which I think is usually the goal when it comes to audio. I know Katrina was concerned that Data's Day might not be a well-regarded episode among fans, but it actually has a rating of 8.2 on IMDb. The episodes that fans apparently weren't very enthused about were the last two. The Loss has an IMDb rating of 6.0 and Final Mission has a rating of 6.8. A small bit of trivia: The actress who played Keiko also played Li (Mulan's mother) in Disney's live action Mulan movie.
