the thing to remember is that in the beginning, the doctor wasn't the main character. it was an ensemble show and each character had it's own skill to contribute to the adventure. this is probably why the Daleks are more scary here, the doctor had not yet developed into the unstoppable force of nature that could make them hesitate simply by being there

Loved the commentary of all the running through London. Lol Years ago a group of friends and I filmed our own Doctor Who episodes and I played the companion. One scene we were running to escape an explosion and after many takes my line "hurry Doctor it's about to explode!" came out slow and sleepy instead of scared and urgent. One of the funnier outtakes we had. 🤣

This is probably not a very popular view, but II don't like the Daleks. What I do is either skip the episodes completely or watch the episodes; and skip over the parts with the Daleks in them. I don't know what it is. I never liked them, even when I was a kid.

All three companions had some pretty good lines and/or scenes in this story! Susan: "I eat!" Ian: "Get new orders!" Barbara: *runs over all the Daleks*

Barbara driving a truck through the Daleks is such a great scene. Do not mess with Barbara or she will mow you down! William Hartnell actually injured his back in the rehearsal of the scene where they were escaping from the Dalek ship, which is why we see so little of him in these 2 episodes as he took time off to recover. Filming was almost non-stop all year for DW at this time, and the only way for the regular actors to take time off was for them to be written out of an episode or two from time to time. This story is so dark. Our Tardis team are separated in a bleak world where humanity is enslaved, everything is in ruins, and anyone you know can be gunned down mercilessly at any moment. Imagine the tension of watching this week by week and speculating in the school yard about what's going to happen. Takes me back to my youth!
