But that would mean that no one who gave up an offering at the ceremony had a memento from someone who died a premature death. Saving something from from a lost loved one can't be that uncommon, can it? Unless the offerings didn't actually get absorbed by the old god, like some kind of scam. No wonder he woke up pissed, if that is the case XD

I think while RTD does a better job at the meaningful small moments, and episodes that make you think, no one does epic speeches like Moffat. I think that's why I like his era so much. The writing combined with the way that Matt Smith shows how much anger and sadness the Doctor actually has when he usually acts totally different is just amazing

I actually have no problem with the leaf thing. the thing that doesn't make sense to me is that Clara somehow knew how to ride the space bike.

I always get the feeling that when he delivers the speech to the old god he is not only talking about the old god. He's actualy voicing the image he has of himself. He sees himself as a parasite feeding on the life of others. Then when he offers up his memories, he hopes the old god takes his offer, because he wants not to remember the terrible things he had to do, like commiting genocide on his own people to stop the time war. And even the end when he says "Infinity is to much." he might be reffering to Clara, but I think he's actually again talking about himself. He wants his time to have an end, because of what he has done and knows he'll do again and again. There's a lot of selfloathing of the doctor in this episode I think.

I'm glad Paula was able to watch an episode with Clara that didn't end with her angry. All of Paula's issues are well founded. I don't debate that at all. I'd say more, but it might veer into spoiler territory. It's just nice when you see a moment when the gals are totally taken in by the scene. That speech is pure magic. When I first watched it, I wondered if 11 was about to regenerate. Sure did look similar to regeneration effects at first.

I absolutely adore Rings of Akhaten. The only thing that does not make sense to me is the leaf thing, that it somehow contains more sentimental value because of unlived days. An infinity of nothing is still nothing. But who cares when the rest of the episode is so rich, vibrant, out there and beautiful. "That is the light of an alien sun" always gives me goosebumps.

One the locals that the Doctor points to is a Hooloovoo, which was mentioned in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" as "a super-intelligent shade of the color blue." Douglas Adams, who wrote the Hitchhiker books, wrote for (classic) Doctor Who back in the day.

As much as I think Matt Smith deserves credit for his acting here I also feel that the writers, Neil Cross (writer of Luther) and Stephen Moffat also deserve credit. This episode explores faith, grief, a new planet and Clara's origin story whilst incorporating singing and musical monologues. Its abstract and thematically emotional in a way that Davies run never was. I think its fair to point out flaws in Moffat's character writing but he deserves credit when the show is written well too. And he's still got a lot of awesome stuff to come!!

I have always loved that monologue. Most of my favorite episodes have his best monologues in them. In fact, my favorite episode of the entire series has what I consider to be the best monologue ever. I have been a little confused at what the Old God actually eats, and what it costs. Of course, this episode also has a bit of a "surprise! its actually THIS" thing going on. But like you said, it really doesn't matter because that last part of the episode would have been worth anything.

I love that episode. I do love it so much. Also, if you want to show this to Paula, I bet she'd enjoy it. There was a convention where Colin Baker, the Sixth Doctor, was handed the speech to perform as his Doctor, and he just KILLED it. One of the most anticipated reactions for me personally. Many think it's just an average episode with a great speech, but I love it so much for what it is and I cosider it a top 10 episode. Love the whole Star Wars-y feeling, the heart-warming story, and of course the phenomenal music and Matt Smith's finest moment.

I always had a problem with the end one, the whole they destroyed such a giant being with a leaf, but this time around that did not bother me, it’s such a great episode and I’m glad that Paula is feeling so serene, you know an episode is good when it makes a person that relaxed and contented.
