It is a very summary and child friendly look at some basic steps towards enlightenment, but sound in principle. I think the only trouble is Aang's final step where he mistakes "no attachments" for "you can't care about individual people", but then, it's reasonable in the show for some nuances to be lost on a 12 year old. Any number of adults struggle with taking a healthy attitude towards personal relationships, less built on control and ownership and more trust. If Aang been able to switch from "Look at me Katara!" to "I have to believe she can save herself for now" just cause Patik tells him that's how you do it, well, it would have been a shorter show.

Kudos to Paula's poker face. Also, the way I've come to think of it, especially through therapy, is that Guilt is about my actions, while Shame is about me. It's the difference between, "I did bad things" vs, "I am a bad person." Thus, as the Guru laid out for Aang, forgiving ourselves for what we have done can relieve us of guilt, while accepting ourselves for who and what we are can relieve us of shame. Or, as Iroh said earlier this season, "Pride is not the opposite of shame, but its source. True humility is the only antidote to shame."
