It does get explained in season 4 of Enterprise, but not until later in the season. The ground work for it is laid out in episodes 4-6 of season 4, but the actual explanation is revealed later in the season. Episodes 15 and 16 :)

More trivia notes: 1. The whistle sound used for the Kirk’s ship-wide announcements is revived in TNG, most notably season one’s “Where No One Has Gone Before”. 2. During Gene Roddenberry’s LAPD career, he served with a fellow officer named Wilbur Lee Clingan, which may be the origin of the variant pronunciation of “Klingon” in the series. 3. Nilz Baris (“this guy is the wooorrsst”) played by William Schallert later guest-stars as a Bajoran musician in DS9 season two’s “Sanctuary”. 4. Michael Pataki who played the Klingon throwing all the shade at Scotty later guest-starred in TNG season one’s “Too Short a Season” playing Karnas, the governor of Mordan IV.

It's like "someone" just keeps throwing Tribbles at Kirk's head. The "terrorists" in Die Hard were actually German - not Russian. They also had an African-American and a Chinese-American in the group.

Incidentally, the green-ish color of Kirk's new tunic is how the "gold" uniforms were supposed to look, but the material used in them made them appear "gold" on camera, but they were meant to be a bright green like the tunic in this episode.

I think for most viewers the "Klingons look different because the makeup people had a bigger budget" explanation is satisfactory for the difference between TOS and TNG-era shows. I thought Enterprise's explanation, while clever, was unnecessary. However, after 25 seasons of TV shows and 11 movies of them looking the pretty much the way they have since TNG started in '87, I have no idea why the Discovery showrunners thought redoing the Klingons again was a good idea.

Oh, in a completely funny Star Trek aside, my next episode of Futurama on Hulu just happened to be "To Where No Fan Has Gone Before" and it's a great TOS callback episode. (I like to let animated comedies [or a few specific live action sitcoms] play while I sleep because I'm less likely to have disturbing dreams that way. )

'Enterprise' goes into great detail about what happened with the Klingons. I think it was a GREAT explanation. Clingan was the name of a police officer that worked with Roddenbery in his police days. He named the Klingons, "Clingans". He did the same with Kahn Noonian Singh. He served in the war with a man named Noonian Soong.

TOS certainly reflected on issues of its day - among that the "communist threat". But it's a little more broad than that. For all its faults (and morally indefensible military and clandestine actions during the Cold War), the US - in constrast to the USSR - had partners, not vasalles and occupied territories (ask the Polish or the Czech what they think of the USSR...), and promoted things like freedom of the press, democracy and freedom to criticize those in power. And of course both the Soviet Union and the western (NATO) powers sought to expand their sphere of influence - which is reflected in TOS, and I think not in a nationalist way, because I know of no other mainstream media phenomenon from the US of the 60s that was so aware and critical of societal and political issues. The Federation, while certainly based on the same enlightenment-humanistic ideas as the western democracies, was never meant to just symbolize the current US - but a global society where technology and those humanstic values allowed for a global society based on those values, uniting everyone in light of the knowledge that there is a vast galaxy with many civilizations out there - and without banding together, humanity doesn't stand a chance. And while the Klingons were certainly also representative of the USSR - I think it's more generally about the idea of competing conceptions of society and politics - imperalism or oligarchy and militarism vs a federalist democracy interested in cooperation and exploration. Of course when the time for TNG came (on air 4 years before the fall of the Soviet Union), they gladly used to the opportunity to represent the idea of peaceful coexistance and exchange of ideas with the former enemy. Also... just a side note - Paula used Die Hard as an example for Cold-War type stories with Russians... but I don't think there were any russian state actors in the original die hard (trilogy), were there? The first was Hans Gruber and his band of thieves posing as terrorists, the second one had rogue US military working with/for a South-(Middle?)-American dictator - and the third had Hans's brother as the villain. I must confess I don't remember the later ones - but they were made long after the USSR had disbanded.

Whilst watching this episode I couldn't help mentally inserting all the DS9 inserts. I love both tribble episodes. I believe there was an animated series episode with tribbles as well but I haven't really watched the animated series. In regards to the comment about red shirts, I remember seeing something someone did that showed that if you take the number of red shirts that die against the number of red shirts that appear in the entire series the gold shirts are more likely to die. Someone was obviously trying to go up against the stereotype and get them their due.

Klingons DO eventually get explained in the prequel series 'Enterprise.' Which the newer shows have since stupidly ignored completely, instead going with 'Klingon's look however we want them to." Which I think is just laziness on the new writer's part. Just another reason along with tone , morality and aesthetic shift and thrown together plotting that drives me away from the new stuff. Also, the Klingon's design change started in the first TOS movie in 1979 and progressed from there. Between S3 & 4 you guys should watch a couple more TOS episodes, one of then which HAS to be "Space Seed." and then the first two TOS movies. Then between S 5& 6 you guys should also watch movies 3 & 4.

You guys definitely need to watch Journey to Babel, for character reasons. I agree Space Seed is a good episode, though maybe it could wait until you are ready to watch the movies. I think it might be good to get y'all to watch an episode that is...a different kind of comedy: Spock's Brain.

Still hope next time you gals do this I can recommend Space Seed, a classic episode that is so beloved. (wasn't a patreon back when the poll happened, I am a patient man who can always be tasked with something else until you decide to check it out) {the in ( ) part is merely added for dramatic effect and an inside joke aimed towards people familiar with the episode and... Just using the talking style of a TOS character)

Since nobody mentioned it yet, the different looks of Klingons are explained in detail in Enterprise season 4 episodes I believe. I hope we'll get there eventually :)

Even as a kid watching Star Trek TNG I ha heard of the tribbles episode long before I saw it. I vaguely remember at some amusement park, don't remember if it was MGM or Universal did a re-enact a scene of various tv shows and you got a cassette tape of it afterwards, and it was the tribbles episode. I'm 40 years old now and this happened when I was around 8 or when we went back when I was 12 years old, both my parents have been for over 20 years now so I apologize if my memory is a little hazy on the details of that attraction. It was all greenscreen stuff, we're talking late 80's early 90's so this episode gave me a bit of nostalgia.
