A fun fact about the real life actor who played Ian Chesterton, William Russell—he married again late in life and had a son whom most people know, Alfred Enoch, better known as Dean in the Harry Potter films and other roles as an adult.

The Matt Smith cameo is a visual version of a "suposed" Hartnell quote. Hartnell one said "with the real concept, this show could still be running, in 40 years" Also its a nice moment, when you realize, Varity lambert died in 2007. She had seen it all. She saw "her" show starting as some low-budget BBC production, the show at its best during Tom Bakers run. The bad writing during the 80s and the cancelation in 1989. The failed american reboot (that gave us the 2nd best Doctor of all time) and modern series in 2005 and the performences of Christopher and David, that turned Doctor Who in one of the biggest pop-culture franchises on the planet. So glad she could see it, before she died :)

I do agree. And the episode really comes alive for me because so much of it was recorded in BBC TV Centre, with its dramatic frontage, curved passageways, impenetrable layout, crazy numbering on the doors, Sidney getting lost after he enters - just wonderful. I worked on the National Lottery shows in BBC TV Centre in the early 2000s and remember encountering an original TARDIS in the storeroom near to where the lottery machines were stored and being unreasonably delighted. I had no idea then that the show would be revived - it seemed then to be rooted in my childhood, never to be revisited.

For me, as dramatised history or docudrama or whatever you want to call it, this is up there with Peter Shaffer's "Amadeus". As with "Amadeus"'s retelling of the life of Mozart, those who have knowledge of the true historical background will know that little of what's on screen really happened *exactly* the way it's depicted -- but at the same time, every scene and almost every moment references actual events, with many lines of dialogue coming directly from interviews, letters and memos of the time. (Yes, Sydney Newman really did use the phrase "full of piss and vinegar" to describe Verity Lambert... :-)) It takes a master dramatist to clear away the clutter and leave a single emotional through-line that starts from the policeman's opening speech to Hartnell ("You need to move along now, sir... You're in the way") and leads inexorably back to that moment after we have come to understand its full significance. I usually put Mark Gatiss's episodes into the "good but not great" category, but this is certainly his finest Who-related work.

Oh, and I guess retrospectively, you get 'Verity' and 'Sydney' as John Smith's parent's names in 'Human Nature'/'Family of Blood' a bit more poignantly now. <3

Yeah, the first episode of Doctor Who's air-date coincided with Kennedy's assassination the day before, so not many people watched it because they were more focused on the news. They were super-lucky that the BBC chose to repeat the episode the next week or Doctor Who might've never stayed on the air! *phew!*

As for Hartnell's age in Doctor Who, to put it in perspective, both he and Capaldi were 55 when they took the role of the Doctor. Now, Hartnell had a grey wig and also lived a 'harder' life than Capaldi (through the wars and such), but it's interesting to realize they were the same age. Hartnell really looked older for his age at the time. :)

Can't wait to watch this reaction! Such a great little biopic and really shows how against-the-odds Doctor Who came to be with Verity -- who was not only the first female producer, but also Jewish, Sydney -- who was a Canadian 'upstart', and Waris -- who was South-Asian and gay. <3

Loved it Gals. Paula you were right, re the back (or forward - it’s a bit wibbly wobbly Timey Wimey) to new whomand classic who. - so many nuggets and Easter eggs - another was the phase - brave heart - that was a Peter Davison line with his companion Tegan. And of course the security guard at the beginning - or as they were known bbc comisonairs- that was played by the actor who Was the first companion Ian Chesterton. So many “ fantastic” in a northern accent. So many.

Love the reaction. This was such a great lead-in to the 50th anniversary special. In Canada, they aired a selection of stories from each Doctor (with commentary), then this, then the 50th. So good.

I knew that "Your tea's getting cold" lady is Carole Anne Ford, but I only just noticed, at 1:17:50... isn't that Jean Marsh and Anneke Wills? Seems like everyone in this episode, even the extras, have had parts in the main show. William Russell as the security guard demanding to see Sidney's security pass, Mark Eden as the BBC1 Controller telling Sidney to kill Doctor Who. It's great that Delia Derbyshire was briefly shown in the Radiophonic workshop recording the theme. Ron Grainer composed it, but it was Delia that was the genius who brought it to life. This is as much a tribute to BBC TV Centre as it is to Doctor Who. So many of the interior scenes from this are instantly recognisable from when I worked there in the early 2000s, such as the foyer at the beginning where Sidney explains the show to Verity. The ending brings back some of my earliest memories of the show. I clearly remember watching Patrick Troughton (by the way, your pronunciation is spot on) in his first story, when as an irritated and confused 7 years old I couldn't understand where the "real" doctor had gone!

I thoroughly enjoyed this reaction. This reaction was different to normal for me. This was because apart from the Matt Smith cameo I knew nothing about the show as this was my first viewing of it, and watching it for the first time in concert with you girls was a pleasure.

Great Reaction! This special has so many emotional beats that always hit me hard and the Galifrey Gals resonated with them too! Moffat handled the 50th especially well given the complex circumstances. In 2013 Moffat produced this, the 50th trilogy, the Fivish Doctors, and all the mini episodes around it. And also Sherlock! Mark Gatiss actually wrote An Adventure in Space and Time (he played Mycroft). Clearly its more of a drama than a documentary but what a way to highlight the best mythology and philosophy of Doctor Who.

Really lovely homage to Hartnell, Verity Lambert, and the show and all who made it happen, despite all the obstacles. Probably the best thing Mark Gattis has done. There were also a lot of people f rom the classic period who were involved and had cameos. You wouldn't have noticed, but the old BBC security guard at the start in the car park was played by William Russell, who was Ian Chesterton, one of the Doctor's first companions from 1963, and the woman in the street shouting for tbe kids to come in for heir tea was none other than Carol Anne Ford, who played Susan, the Doctor's granddaughter. So glad you got to watch this, and so looking onward to the 50th anniversary special next week!
