I was amused to hear Paula talk about the idea of "a cube flying through space" being "horrifying" and saying "that's not what it should look like". I say that because there is only one real life craft designed to fly exclusively in space, the Apollo Lunar Module, and it was actually very boxy-looking. Aerodynamics are pointless when there's no atmosphere.

I really don’t think that’s a great comparison, whoever made that comment. I would say *SPOILER* I think the attack on Earth in Enterprise is closer to 9/11. I understand the devastation aspect, but I’d liken Wolf359 to something along the lines of Pearl Harbor and even that is a bit of a stretch.

Elizabeth Dennehy, who played Shelby was approached by the producers to come in and talk about the lead of Voyager a few years later. She declined the invitation, citing her disinterest in being in a series and how uncomfortable the uniforms were.

Katrina's surprise about shuttle transporters was the same as what fans experienced in the original airing. Trekkers had never seen that before.

Paula has mainly mentioned her feelings about DS9 on discord. Last I heard, she is making her way through season 7. Last time she mentioned it, she basically did not enjoy the characters as much as those on STNG, but there were certainly interesting aspects of the main storyline. She certainly is not keen on revisiting it again anytime soon, but it is still quite some time away before they get to consider options in that regard and they are not keen on ruling anything in or out that far away. I know Paula wants to see some of the movies as well.

I didn't start watching this show until the last couple of seasons, so I missed this episode the first time around. Like Paula, I got to watch them back to back on reruns. I've probably seen this episode 4-5 times, and I always forget what happens, lol. I mean, I remember how it ended with "sleep," but all the little details of the plot I tend to forget. So yeah, it's kind of like watching it for the first time every single time I watch it.

Was that Katrina executing the Picard Maneuver at roughly the 23-minute mark? I think she needs a promotion to lieutenant junior grade, at the very least. I feel the same way about TOS vs TNG. I can appreciate the groundwork TOS laid, but watching TNG is like coming home and kicking off your shoes.

Shaking the arrogance and hubris of starfleet and the federation was the whole point of Q Who, and just because the federation doesn't believe in a militaristic way of expansion doesn't mean other cultures will refrain from expanding that way. The Borg being the current example. The Federation needs a strong defence force and it needs to shake the attitude that being able to fight and win is only a minor part of a starfleet officers abilities. Starfleet needs warriors like Kirk who know how to fight.

I waited to post after this episode but I had a crazy head canon thought...in an alternate universe, if the results of "Measure of a Man" turned out different and Starfleet had decided to put Data clones in all of their starships, how different Wolf 359 could be. This is absolutely NOT to say that they should have cloned Data, just wondering how things could have turned out differently had that happened. Data was the one who in the first episode was able to out maneuver their tractor beam frequencies for example, or coming up with how to overcome Picard's systems......on the other hand, the results of Wolf 359 were very important for Starfleet being prepared for...future things in a different series.

Apparently the USS Endeavour was the one ship of the 40 which survived, I wish there was a follow up to that. Also I love the next episode... Really looking forward to season 4 and I sure hope they do watch DS9 VOY and even ENT

So happy they didn't make as wait too long for this. And the TOS episodes really were a treat that made even the limited wait fly by. On a side note I read in these comment sections that Paula does not like DS9. Any info on that? I mean has she spoken about it and I've missed it? What's her beef with it? Has she ruled out reacting to it in the future? As both a big DS9 and Gallifrey Girls fan I am curious. Thanks!

I’m feeling nostalgic. The first part of “The Best Of Both Worlds” aired right before my college graduation. The second part aired just after I started graduate school. In college I was able to watch TNG, (and VHS tapes of TOS), with a bunch of Star Trek fans. Going into graduate school, I didn’t know anyone. I was in grad school for media studies. My two roommates were law students, and though I found them nice and all, I didn’t really imagine they’d be interested in Part 2. Boy was I wrong. They had both been worrying away the summer, just like me, waiting to find out what would happen. So our friendship got off to a good start, partly by watching Part 2 together and all three of us nearly fainting several times.

It seems a bit up in the air at the moment but I would just once again like to say. Please watch all of DS9 or not at all. I don't think a cherry picking approach is a good way to go. Yes there are some episodes that seem to drag much like TNG but I feel that the premise alone makes it more intriguing and warranting of a full viewing in order. The premise being a fixed point location, the starbase deep space nine. It allows more easily for established plot arcs and characters. It does not in my view lend itself to out of order cherry picked episodes.

What was not mentioned is Commander Sicko (later Captain Sisko) was at Wolf 359 during the battle and was on one of the ships that was destroyed. It is how they tied the series together.

I'm very excited for you guys to be going into the golden era of seasons 4 - 6, total comfort food, go-to streaming content. Personally, like Kate Winslet at the end of Titanic, when I die, I'd like to find myself on the Enterprise D, on my way to yet another concert in Ten Forward, for all eternity. :)

Obviously, this happened before 2001, but I've seen a reviewer make the comparison that Wolf 359 was the 9/11 of the Federation. It's not often explicitly connected, but there are future events that could very easily be seen as a response to the Federation fleet being decimated. (I enjoy the comments being labeled as 2 of 5...) This episode isn't AS great as the previous one, but it is a damn good follow-up that builds from everything that first episode established. I do think this episode did away with some of the stronger character the first one did, though it was still there, just not as strong, but that's because there was so much plot to go through. They do work great in tandem though. Looking forward to the rest and spending more time with the Star Trek... Family.

A great season opener, although I to enjoy the next episode a tad better. I always thought the solution was too quick. Kat, is this the first appearance of Kitty Monroe during a reaction? Another great looking cat. Had a black long hair like that a long time ago. Called her Shadow. :-)

Frankly that depends. First if those ships were total losses, the first thing is did any Captains of those ships survive? And do they warrant immediate postings. The other thing to consider is how large is Starfleet and what types of starships were destroyed. The third is how large of amount of qualified ready to be given a command are currently still sitting as Commanders in Starfleet. If for example they have surviving Captains, and if they already have a large group of qualified candidates, Starfleet mind find it a better fit to promote someone who is wanting a command versus one that seems to have lost the interest. h and the final is, are they currently in a state of war.

This 2-parter was the point where TNG stopped dwelling in the shadow of its predecessor and became a standalone hit in its own right; TOS laid the groundwork for the Star Trek universe, but TNG (and later DS9 and VOY) took that universe to its maximum storytelling potential (which has not been matched since the 90s, I might add). This is the era where Star Trek stopped being mere entertainment and became a true cultural phenomenon. I wish I could go back and see these for the very first time, like Katrina is doing now; I'm quite envious of her experience, and I hope she sticks with it to the end.

Truthfully, since Starfleet lost 40 starships at Wolf 359, Riker would be ORDERED to take command of the next starship out of the shipyards, not asked.

They do such a great job of showing Picard in control through out the series that when we see him vulnerable, like at the end of this episode, it really hits home.

The music for this 2 parter is amongst my favourite. It was the first Star Trek music CD I ever got. I love the scene at the end. Too often things are wrapped up within an episode or a two parter. However, that end scene was simple at showing that this will affect Picard for a long time. Katrina mentioned about the amount of people he must feel responsible for dying. Not told on screen (I don't think) There was a loss of 39 ships and around 13,000 people.
