The Solanae, as beta canon will go on to call them, do pop up again in Star Trek Online, playing a significant role in at least one of those story arcs. STO does like to pick up on a lot of Star Treks loose threads, which I quite like.

So, further thoughts after the reaction: Kat, have you still not noticed the Trek shirt has Hugh the Borg on it? 😜 This was actually a really big episode for the tertiary character of Ensign Sariel Rager. You guys have noticed her a few times already at the Conn, but now she gets a name! The book I read that followed up on these creatures had both her and Riker being pretty traumatized by these events. It is a VERY haunting episode. You'd think once a people reaches Outer Space, creepy alien abductions would become less of a thing, but NOPE. Kat being suspicous of the random civilian woman was kinda funny, considering that the first several times I'd seen this episode I didn't register her at the poetry recital. Oh, the Hot Milk Tottie that is a recipie from Picard's Aunt is a returning reference back to the episode "Night Terrors" where the crew wasn't getting any REM sleep and Deanna kept having cheesy greenscreen dreams - "Where are you?!" Funny thing about the technobabble is, once you pay attention and listen to it enough, it starts making sense. For example, in this episode, Subspace is a dimensional realm underneath normal space that is usually what allows ships to conduct scans communicate with each other and other planets from vast distances, but here, it's also an area in which these alien creatures live and abducting people to, normally inaccessable for creatures to cross through, but Geordie modifications to the subspace sensors created a schism to allow people to pass through. But the aliens can't survive outside their realm, and thus the experiments. Creeepy, chameleon looking boogers.

It always bugs me about this episode that Riker just lies there for (evidently) 9 minutes, doing nothing. The plan was "when this tracker beeps, it means we've got the info" so why does he just keep lying there after he gets the signal?

The big question after this episode is, was Data's poetry better than vogon poetry? I guess I haven't heard enough examples of either to have a proper opinion, but then again, I don't think I want to.

I think this is the best use of the holodeck. It's not a gimmick or something that will kill everyone, it's just a really creative tool that was not the whole focus of the episode.

Not able to watch reaction yet, but this is low-key one of my favorite episodes. Good atmosphere, hilarious start, great use of the holodeck and I just recently finished a book that followed up on these guys.

I'm sure that the "thing" that went out into space at the end was their office biller trying to find a proper contact number for the insurance company. Goddam ICD-10s were wrong, and they need to resubmit them for more billable procedures. All that cost to build a levitation device that works through subspace gateways in order to make sure those were IN-OFFICE procedures, and they forgot to code a facilities charge!

For me, this is the closest that TNG got to being a horror film. I actually had nightmares after watching it the first time.

What's worse was that Riker and the rest all got bills for the procedures as the alien realm was considered "Out Of Network". If you're living outside of the USA it's one of the many ways we get screwed over as we still don't have universal healthcare like the rest of you.
