When Peter Davison took on the role there was a lot of concern about a young, fit, "dishy" Doctor traveling with single women. Mary Whitehouse (the self-appointed guardian of British morality & decency) was campaigning about immorality in the media (sound familiar?) so there was an effort to never, ever portray the Doctor as anything romantic. You'll notice that Nyssa hugs/comforts Tegan over Adric's death, but the doctor is far away and alone. Its not an accident. This would eventually change, but I wont spoil that...

In that last moment when they focus on his face, I thought The Doctor was thinking about what the Cyber Leader said to him about emotions being a weakness and how the Doctor had defended having emotions without remembering about grief. The Doctor has had this conversation with Cybermen, Daleks and others before, but this was literally the first time his words were thrown back in his face.
