When the only real criticism one can make of the performances of these child performers is that the one playing Young Picard speaks most of his lines a little too fast for the character, then you KNOW they did fantastic! Though one has to point out the question of how capable the adults are on this ship, when four children (five if you count Alexander) are able to retake the ship without firing a single phaser? They could do it, but the adults couldn't even with weapons? That said, I do love the episode regardless, especially since I watched this when it first aired when I was eleven.

I love TNG. But I'm sad that we got the series Picard (haven't watched) but I can only imagine is a bittersweet reflection on time and moving on, like Logan (also haven't watched. hate time. hate moving on). In fairness, it was a novel phenomenon in this episode that caused them to de-age, something they may not have been able to reproduce. However, there was a season 2 episode ("Unnatural Selection" where Pulaski was de-aged) where they did discover a true fountain of youth using off-the-shelf Trek tech.

Their clothes remained the same size when they beamed aboard. They'd fabricated smaller ones by the time they were brought to sickbay. Also note later when Ro said to Guinan that she wanted to be back in her "own uniform".

Alexander was a great add-on for this ep. I especially liked when Picard ordered him to "report" when he returned back with the hypospray, as if he were supervising a mini-Worf.

Especially since the fountain of youth was a major plot point later on. Granted, usually in Trek they really try to sell the freak nature of incidents like this.

I shouldn’t be surprised that some trekkies don’t like this. Sometimes the hardcore sci-fi people can be a little too into themselves. It’s a nice little departure episode from some of the more serious ones, especially the two parter that’s already been hinted at. I think the deeper layers only get touched upon and you let the viewer do the work of figuring out the meanings. Ronald D. Moore is one of my favorite writers from the show, and as far as I’m concerned he and a few others should be the only writers allowed in a Star Trek writers room.

It really throws me that the actor playing young Picard has a completely different accent then adult Picard.

Its a fun episode, but what makes no sense is that they basically discovered the secret to eternal youth (or at least de-aging) and the federation never seems to want to explore this in the future? Is it just me or did they pass of a huge discovery as if it was nothing. Particular since there was that episode where the Old admiral de-aged himself for the hostage negotiations. It was made to be a really big deal back then, but now, in this episode, its treated as a weird quirk and nothing more. It just seems inconsistent. Also, if I was Picard I would have asked for a few years off, maybe a decade ;) they didn't have to completely re-age him.

Poor Worf. He got screwed so much by the writers. Honestly, Starfleet security in general really bugs me. Not just the "red shirt" phenomenon, but with how easy it is to take control of a ship. My phone has more security than a starship.

Iremembering for myself that this was Ensign Ro/Michelle Forbes last episode foe some reason. Before the episode ended I of course learned I was wrong. But Paula kept looking sad. I thought she was sad thinking she was going to have to tell that to Kat. I'm glad I was wrong.

An awful lot of supposedly rare transporter accidents happen aboard the Enterprise. My favorite rule of acquisition is, “Dignity and an empty sack are worth the sack.”

One reason I like this episode is because it shows how much the actor who played young Picard here has grown as an actor since he played Picard's nephew, Rene way back in "Family" when Picard went home to recover from being assimilated into the Borg. He captured Patrick Stewart's performance really well, maybe because he already had experience playing alongside the man. plus he's a good foot and a half taller, lol. And poor Worf, he just ate that shot. And Alexander is blithely below decks just playing. Though his father getting his ass kicked is just a regular Tuesday afternoon for the kid. "Alexander, I'm afraid there's been an incident. Your father was injured in the course of his duties. He's in sickbay." "Oh. Is he paralyzed again?" "No, Doctor Crusher thinks he''ll make a full recovery." "Oh. Okey-dokie. I'm gonna go play with my toy, lemme know when he's okay."

You forgot the most important trivia of all, that this is the last regular appearance of O'Brien and family. They already started filming DS9. O'Brien only gets a goodbye to the Enterprise in the DS9 pilot.

I was sort of surprised to hear Paula say there are a significant number of people who don't like this one! I always considered it to be one of the better-received ones among the audience. Sure, it was lighter in tone than many, but not everything has to be Sturm und Drang all the time... I'm assuming my invitation to the dinosaur-themed birthday party was delayed in the mail, because there's no way you wouldn't have invited me to it. :P Riker's "explanation" of how the computer works to the Ferengi is almost meta, sending up Treknobabble on a fizzbin level (TOS reference, episode "Piece of the Action," where Kirk ascends similar oratorical heights to confuse and confound his opponents). Another thing I loved was giving Alexander a significant part to play... Picard and company may have been reduced to kids, but they still had a Klingon to rely on!

I started watching TNG when it initially aired during Season 5, which just so happens to be my favorite season. I had just turned 12 a week before this aired, so I was the same age they were supposed to be, and I absolutely loved this episode! Still do, but I often wonder if it's through nostalgic eyes.

This episode was interesting when it was released. I do remember seeing it on TV but not having any feelings good or bad, I still don't. Seeing Alexander in this episode was pretty fun tho. I do find it interesting people in the future calling out crayons. Like, they are a brand more than a wax coloring stick. I wonder how many things will be know for their major brand name in the future. In the 24th century are they gonna have just a bunch of brand names instead of any other description.

I really enjoy this episode, although like last week's you have to apply the MST3K Mantra: "...repeat to yourself it's just a show, I should really just relax." This week we just have to not question how easily a bunch of Ferengi managed to seize the Enterprise, and how such a strangely competent group then immediately transformed back into typical Ferengi clowns. A fun story justifies the fridge logic.

I enjoy this episode, it is so much fun. I thought they did a great job casting the actors that played the kids! Ro is one of my favorite characters and I felt like she was actually with us throughout the episode.

Wow, you recorded this one on my birthday! Kat, I can't tell you how many dinosaur themed parties I had. Is it a Leo thing?? As for the episode, I grew up watching TNG, so I loved this episode. I was literally the same age as the kids when this originally aired and all I could think about was running around the Enterprise like them. In hindsight, it's silly fun but had some nice poignant moments too.

Paula seemed to touch on this rather quickly in passing, but yes the young Picard was played by the same actor who played his nephew Rene from Season 4's "Family". Also, the ensign (Christie Haydon) at 25:18 who Kat thought looked like a child had actually appeared about a half dozen times in the series by this point.

I'm with Ronald on this. I understand him, not being interested writing a kids episode, not being able to explore from an adult perspective. They did a decent job, however the Ferengi coming in halfway through the show as a convenient and unbelievable villain was poor writing. This episode wasn't for me, but more enjoyable episodes for me coming up.

The midseason gap is between those two episodes and is where Deep Space Nine starts up, which runs concurrent with TNG for the rest of its run. As I have heard no discussion from the Gals recently about DS9 I will assume they will not be reacting to that show, or at least until TNG concludes. That's a shame, but their plate is probably full at present.

A certain two parter is coming up, and I'm honestly not sure if Kat should even try watching it as it's imo by far the most disturbing Trek episode and she doesn't have to endure anything for our benefit.

I always thought that this episode would have been cool if Picard had gotten more of the kids involved in retaking the ship... but this was otherwise a fun episode... and I dont say that often about Ferengi episodes.

Ah, Worf. Can't hit a Ferengi on the bridge who was pretty much just standing completely still. Better get in some more phaser practice on the Holodeck with Guinan. Okay, first and foremost, as everybody else is about to point out, the child actors did and phenomenal job, and the casting was spot on. The young man playing young Picard had it totally down. He had previously played Ricard's nephew who admired him in episode 4x02. That being said, the episode was basically silly, and just got too silly with Ferengi so easily commandeering the flagship of Starfleet. In reality, the senior staff would likely be reassigned to administrative duties at various star bases. A character on DS9 points out some of the security gaffs that took place on the Enterprise to Worf after he complained about security on the space station.

The only issue with this episode is that Picard has a artificial heart and it probably wouldn't fit in younger Picard's body. Otherwise a great and funny episode.

The idea for young Ro becoming a regular went all the way to EP Rick Berman. Some of the producers loved the idea of a 12 year old Ro at the helm. It also gave them the opportunity to move away from Michelle Forbes (who resisted making appearances) while keeping her character.
