One of my personal favorites, it's basically a one man show and Peter Capaldi gets to show off his his acting chops. This season and the next are part of the reason I fell in love with Capaldi's portrayal of The Doctor.

Everything about this episode in on point - the writing, the direction, the cinematography, lighting, set design, music … and then on top of it all you’ve got Capaldi’s outstanding solo performance. As others have said, an absolute masterpiece. People complain about Moffat, but I think that has more to do with his overreach in some complicated story arcs, and some of his portrayals of female characters, but stories like this, and Listen and Blink will stand forever as masterpieces of Doctor Who.

This story has helped me through a lot of difficult times losing people. I cant really explain it but i feel like the doctor punching through the wall was a metaphor for how to deal with sadness; chipping away at it a bit at a time. The words about grief and losing people really hit home for me.. these three episodes are really special to me. No words can explain my adoration for Peter here, what a blessing to the whoniverse. He is truly Rachel Talalay did such an incredible job with direction here that i wish she'd get more work in film & Murry Golds 'A Shepherds Boy' is saved on spotify for the rest of my life. More to say next week, but for now: Hug your family and care for eachother, much love 🖤

Such a freaking masterpiece of a story! <3 <3 This story is such a beautiful meditation on things like grief and loss and even depression (and really deepens each time you rewatch it, IMO). Again, an utter masterpiece! Plus, when this episode was hinted at (before it aired) that it'd basically be a one-hander by Capaldi, people didn't think it could be done, but holy crap, Capaldi did it amazingly! What a masterclass of acting by Peter, writing by Moffat, directing by Rachel Talalay, and a gorgeous soundtrack by Murray Gold! <3 I'm still absolutely flabbergasted it didn't win any awards. :( (And I know some people weren't keen on the TARDIS-as-a-storm-room thing that went on in the story, saying it was too similar to 'Sherlock', but personally I loved seeing inside the Doctor's head and how he works out things. Does it ruin the magic as he says? Not for me!) P.S. "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" is sadly such a fitting quote for this story. :(

I love this episode. Moffat has always been best with high-concept single-storey time-wimey arcs and this one strips it back to just the Doctor in his ultimate test of tenacity. Its so uniquely Doctor Who; where else could you tell a story like this!? And a story that plays so much to the lead actor's strengths; Capaldi is an unparalleled monologue-ist!! Its an incredible work of imagination that sits up there with Listen, The Empty Child, Don't Blink. And those are all Moffat episodes!

The skulls were modeled from Peter's prosthetic head then painted. If you look at the scene where he places the skull on the parapet they fade from the skull to his head lining up, seeming to morph from one to the other - very well done and a great clue that the skulls are his . maybe he was winking at the audience, but he was addressing his remarks to Clara. He always was excited to tell her how he escaped and now he was reduced to telling the Clara in his mind palace... and then grieved because he couldnt tell her in real life.

Also, some facts and insight - the skull was actually modeled after Capaldi's own skull, the guy playing the Veil played Colony Sarff in the season opener and Capaldi's description of hybrid as "Me" was intentionaly ambiguous - he could be referring to Ashildr, but many people though he was meaning himself because in the movie the 8th Doctor infamously said that his mother was human

I've been looking to this one ever since you two started reacting to Who! Not only it is the best DW episode ever, but imho it's one of the best pieces of television ever. Moffat's writing, Talalay's direction, Gold's music and Capaldi's acting are all terrific and come together so well. Such a shame this episode didn't win any prize. Paula usually is very good with predictions and it was fun to see a reactor who understood what was going on so early in the episode.

There is actually a story from Big Finish (which yes, is totally canon, the BBC has indicated as much, and Moffat has admitted it when he had Eight recite the names of his Big Finish companions) that explains why the Doctor was scared and ran from Gallifrey. He had a brother named Braxiatel who was ordered by the President of the time to kill the Doctor and his granddaughter Susan as a test of loyalty. Brax told the Doctor so he could run, and then later made sure the President had an "unfortunate accident". So yeah, the Doctor was scared for the lives of himself and his granddaughter, knowing that they were wanted dead. And who knows if it was just the President or more people high up? So there was no reason to go back.

This is Capaldi at his best and if anyone asks what made him a great Doctor just point to this masterpiece. But what recognition did his performance receive? Nothing! He deserved a BAFTA, imho. Also, he was spotted wandering serenely around the shops on Crouch End Broadway with his wife the other day, so he is enjoying his life right now, I'm glad to say.

Heaven Sent is one of my all time favorite episodes. Also I think I read somewhere that because those were actually his clothes, the original version of the Doctor had to go around naked after he jumped in the water.

Confession dial is not a plot hole. It's not there in the case of Time Lord's regeneration but his/her death. There's no need to make a will if you're just regenerating.

I'll say something nice about Moffat: This is the best episode he's ever written. Yes, even better than his RTD-era stuff. Yes, even Blink. And see, I can't say more than that because spoilers, which will please Moffat fans. ;)
