Interesting that her lesson on the elements composing all objects, such as rock in the wood giving weight and the water in the wood being hard to see, she didn't consider that there would be the fire in the rock. I take slight issue with Kat saying that they didn't have the intelligence to understand, rather than lacking the knowledge and/or education. Though I know this was more of a slip of the tongue in a live reaction, it's one of my pet peeves when shows portray "smart" as knowing a lot of things, rather than the drive to learn and understand, which the teacher did show.

Possibly there is a Betazed advancement program in Star Fleet? She still seems under-qualified for her position. No love for the android who is obviously an oppressed minority. Not fair. I want to know which admiral is in charge!

My head canon is that Troi is basically the equivalent of a psychiatrist or a Ph.D. of psychology, and automatically got the rank of full-lieutenant (base rank for physicians in the Navy) out of the Academy. Then attained Lt. Commander at some point, and got a provisional promotion to Commander based on getting the bridge qualification, but never bothered with it since it wouldn't have a material difference in her job. Obviously there are bridge-qualified personnel that aren't Commanders (season one Geordi was Lt. Jr. grade and was in command during The Arsenal of Freedom), so we know that this test isn't a Commander's test. But the professional accreditation (for lack of a better term) essentially let her jump two ranks.

Rather than march stoically to his death, it would have been funny to see Holodeck Geordi show reluctance so that Troi would have had to make him go. (it was also quite the coincidence that the training exercise adhered to their current situation, where Cmdr "immune to radiation" Data was not on board)

That actress was a good fit for the character. She was a supporting character on The Waltons (my Mom's favorite show) where her character was often stuck-up and arrogant, but ultimately well meaning.

I assume Riker is following the proper rules with Troi. But I feel like an exam for becoming a bridge officer and an exam for being promoted to Commander should be two different things. Data is already regularly taking command with the lesser rank. I figure it's more writers not being interested in how their rules match up with the real world. And yes, again, they're not actually in the US Navy.

Regarding the radiation cure, it is true there is no cure for radiation poisoning that we know of but it is only true of normal types of radiation like alpha, beta and gamma radiation. We are never told what type of radiation that the metal emits, It could be theta radiation which has a known treatment in the Star Trek universe.

Starfleet isn’t the military per se, though it does take on that role in war situations. But its mostly for exploration and diplomacy and the professional culture is likely different.

given that Star Fleet doesn't care Riker is in a relationship with his subordinates nor do they care Picard doing the same. I guess professional boundaries aren't important in the future and neither is formalities. Who knows, maybe Troi asked just because she's friendly with Riker. A bit of cronyism/nepotism

I agree, she's a great character. It's a common bit of lazy writing to portray Medieval scholars as close-minded idiots for having Medieval ideas, but it wasn't true of the real Middle Ages and it doesn't have to be true of fictional counterparts either. I like that this episode gives full recognition to that.

This episode is good, but it seems Starfleet promotion and rank rules are very different from the real world military. I'm no expert, but I believe you don't just "sign up" to get promoted like Troi does here. In fact, I'm pretty sure in the case of say, the Navy, if you go too many years as an officer without a promotion you're forced to retire. It's probably more complicated than that, but in the real world Data probably wouldn't go seven years without a promotion, especially given all that he's done. Again, we can just figure Starfleet does things differently.

I really like the teacher/scientist character from the village. She's spouting all of this nonsense, but it's all founded in an effort to understand the natural world around her. And when Data introduces new ideas to her and shows her how he's reaching these conclusions, she's open to it. She tries to understand it. I think she earns the right to call herself a scientist.

Trio still flunked that test. You don't send a main character off to die. You send one of the nobodies like Picard did last week. I'm sure that Ensign Shmuck could make the needed repair instead of sending your chief engineer to sizzle. Also, they don't have radiation suits? Really? Doesn't Data deserve a promotion after all the stuff he's done in the seven seasons of this show?

Love the episode, but how does Troi outrank Data? I think its a clear case of Robophobia! Sure, Troi struggles for a week and gets promoted. Data slaves away for decades and all he gets is half his face chopped off. Maybe Lore is right about humans?

I wonder what happens on that planet as a result of Data's visit. Does it have a scientific revolution? Or does Data's visit pass into myth and legend? I like to think "Jaden the Iceman" is a popular children's bedtime story on that planet.

The episode to me, feels like the bread and butter of what Voyager typically put out. It's not bad here, but it would be a very typical, ho-hum Voyager episode.

So, I had the basic framework for this episode several years before it aired. "Data gets amnesia and forgets he's an android." That's as far as I got with it. Granted, amnesia was a rather heavily-leaned-on TV trope at the time.
