Nonverbal people are probably the most excluded from any community on Earth. Heck, I have known the extent to which people ignore you if you're just the only person in a group chat without a mic. It's so sweet that Onion and the gang have somehow found each other, and I wish we got to see more of them.

It’s interesting how much better Gem Harvest is seven years later. It first aired right after the 2016 election and its message seemed too naive and quaint for a lot of people coming out of those results. Now, with some distance and being able to appreciate the message for what it is as opposed to projecting our own more specific reality on to it, and with many years of extreme anger and lack of harmony on social media, it’s message is now seen as less of a reflection of how things are and more of an aspirational one where we hope we can communicate in that way with each other one day.

I think gem harvest is the episode my opinions changed on the most since it came out. Originally I was against Andy but now I'm on his side. It also helps he's voiced by carl.

“Onion Gang” is actually a really poignant episode. I have to imagine making all of Onion’s friends also non-speaking (except for Garbanzo, who appeared to be aphasic) was a deliberate choice. Although none of Onion’s friends appeared to be using sign language or AACs, they were able to understand one another’s intent (assumedly because they spent all summer together). Whether or not this is accurate representation, I’ll defer to the non-speaking community. I was 18 and 20 when my little cousins were born, so I can definitely relate to feeling more like an uncle than a cousin.

Watching Uncle Andy trying to put the gems into context he could understand and getting it all wrong was a treat. It reminds me of the experiences I had growing up when artistic people were labelled "dirty hippies" and conformity was the rule of the day. Struck a nerve! And to see Andy deciding to accept people he doesnt understand was damn poignant!

I remember the first time I yelled at my nephew while babysitting him. He was jumping on the couch and I dived to save him from hitting his head on the coffee table. I had to explain I was angry because of what he did because he almost hurt himself. He was a toddler at the time and about to turn 17 in a week. lol
