holy hell the Brannon Braga = DNA stuff = Voyager writer factoid! Voyager makes SO MUCH SENSE NOW! I've also always confused this episode with "Voyager-ness" in the past, and now I know why!

This is definitely one of the weirdest TNG episodes. The only thing I remembered from it was Spot turning into a lizard. That is hard to forget.

I really enjoyed this episode but I seem to like th Dumpster Fire episodes. I was only 12 or 13 when I first saw this episode tho and im sure that had a lot to do with it.

Gates did an amazing job directing this episode, she also has since stated that after her request to direct was approved she didn't get to chose what episode it was and was given this which must've added additional pressure. Her working with Jim Henson with puppets and creatures on the movie Labrynth certainly helped especially getting each actor transforming to slowly become what animal, insect, creature etc they would eventually become. Marina Sirtis as Deanna did a stellar job portraying the ocean like creature she was turning into especially in her scene with Data and Picard, infact everyone did a great job from Barclay to Ogowa. Fun fact: Did you know that the scene in the Ready Room where Will had fully tranformed into a caveman was not Jonathan Frakes but his stunt double? 😳 Even the close up of his eye and giving the finger to Picard as his hand went across the fish tank glass looks just like Riker but so much makeup and no lines made it easier to shoot continuously for when he charged at Picard and then was stunned twice by Data.

I think we’re supposed to assume that Dr. Crusher didn’t have a chance to devolve because the medical staff put her into stasis before she started to change. As for reconstructive surgery, TNG consistently portrays surgery as something much simpler and quicker than it is in the modern day, like when they have to infiltrate an alien society and get insta-cosmetic surgery. Why Nurse Ogawa would be representing the medical staff at the meeting Riker called (rather than one of the other doctors on staff, like Dr. Solar), I’m guessing it was for ease of casting, as Ogawa is a semi-regular and the other Enterprise doctors aren’t. This is definitely in the pantheon of TNG horror episodes. The scene with the venom sack was very jarring, despite the rather cheap venom-spitting effect.

Brannon Braga does his "Fun with DNA" plot that he indulges in every so often. And often coupled with a total misunderstanding of how DNA and evolution works. And since Braga went on to be a main writer on Voyager, Genesis has a LOT in common with the typical Voyager episode. The same kinda bonkers stuff. Dr. Crusher got a face-full of acid so she could be written out to direct. Kat, your discussion of how Data scienced the science... the writers are on record as having got to a point where the script would have "tech the tech" as placeholders for their scientific advisor to write in semi-plausible explanations.

I sound like a broken record, but I LOVE season 7. It's so "out there" and fun: Some TOS-style stories, oddball plotlines, fever dream episodes... along with some genuinely solid personal favorites (Gambit, Pegasus, Lower Decks, Thine Own Self, etc). Even the so-called "bad" episodes are good, IMO. PS: The Iguana reaction is priceless!

I think Gates did a tremendous job with what she was given! A very silly concept, lots of technical and post effects, a single-episode budget... that is A LOT to juggle, even for a seasoned director. She was able to get fantastic performances from everyone (Marina when Troi gets pulled out of the water was particularly good) and make what could have been a *horrible* episode at least fun and campy.

Another weird, almost TOS-style episode, which for me contributed to the overall lesser quality of this season (excepting the finale and a select number of other episodes). Gates McFadden, of course, did a great freshman job of directing (very atmospheric and tense, with a good jump scare), though the quality of the story (or lack thereof) is in the writing. I believe at this point the stronger writing talent (Moore, Behr, Echevarria, et al) were being more and more siphoned off by DS9 (which needed the talent, since it was in direct competition with Babylon 5), and Berman, Taylor and Piller were focused on pre-production for Voyager, which would explain the dip in quality. Thankfully, there are still a couple of gems coming up before the end. 😁

First time I saw this episode and I thought the iguana was Worf. I wasnt paying close attention by this point and I must have been talking on the phone,so when i looked up and saw the iguana, I thought that was the reptilian form of Worf.

I always really liked this one. They managed to turn it into a pretty good horror story. And on a second viewing you can see how the crew's behavior fits their animal forms. One thing I dislike is that they gave Picard the excuse of the disease when he gets scared. Why not really let the guy be scared? This craziness could even freak HIM out.

So you get transformed into a predatory beast roaming the ship for a few days. Then Data's cure returns you to normal and everything is good, except several crewmembers are unaccounted for. Then you poop out a com badge. Yah.... I think Paula is right in that Troi's gonna have her work cut out for her. Data's Worf-lure perfume is called "Smellin' of Troi". Actually that was a Simpsons joke.

I remembered the plot being ofcourse ridiculous but I forgot how batshit this episode was. When people say science fiction is silly I have to look at this and like bow my head and say", yeah I guess".
