My gran was widowed in 1930. She kept the whole family together. She would probably say, "WELL!" at being called a badass - and then burst out laughing! But from their generation came their post-war daughters of the 50s and 60s. They had some good teachers!

It was "thorns" through the ears and tongue, not "horns." Fast-forward a few decades and Susan's just going to get a few piercings. She can put some rings in them. (Strange how things can change in a few years from horror to something lots of people choose.)
