My favorite moment yet I think is Pearl making the least fun pie face joke in history. Such bold comedy and drama, mixed together. And yet another moment that gets more layers once we know the fairly mundane secret of Pearl's food repulsion. I love the Buck, Jenny and Sour Cream gang, although Buck's introduction here is a little weird - clearly the idea is to show us Lars trying too hard and putting his foot in his mouth, but it just makes Buck sound super negative as he turns everything Lars says back on him. But in general it's such a great twist on the peanut gallery group of side characters: To begin with, we eventually get to know them all individually and they have their own stuff going on with their families and things and they don't really function as a "gang" that a typical show would have, they're just a friend group who sometimes spend time together. And on top of which, when they are together they manage to bring out the best in each other in such a lovely way - they're kind, sensitive, earnest; they include the much younger Steven and show him every respect, they communicate openly about their feelings and everything. Imagine how hard it would be for the boys to believe Jenny when she says she's "the evil twin" out of her and Kicki! It would be hard to say how successfully the show would play its themes of positivity and forgiveness without these three goobers. Oh jeez I have so many thoughts about this show, maybe I should go blog or something.

Man, a lot of these episodes I haven't seen again since the first time I watched the show, and wow, even some of these early episodes are just really really good!
