BBC during this period: Too much comedy/not enough action followed by too much action/not enough comedy. Change the length of the show although scripts were already in preproduction. Everything they could to sabotage the show so there wouldnt be any complaints when they dropped the hammer.

Yep, the Doctor killed a lot of people in this one— and often throughout the Sixth Doctor era. As I mentioned in a comment to last week's episode, then-script editor Eric Saward strongly believed Dr Who should emulate the 80s action movies then in vogue, and the Doctor himself should be that style of action hero. He started pushing for that when he became script editor during the Fifth Doctor's run— he put guns in the Fifth Doctor's hands quite a lot, but Peter Davison's version of the character just couldn't go that way. But with the chance to influence a new Doctor's character design, Saward got a lot more of what he wanted.

Yes! I called it 30 years ago - Sil is a Ferengi slug. The contents of the Doctor's pockets is a running gag through classic & new Who - string, cricket ball, aircar pilots license, jelly babies (a perennial), membership card to Alpha Centarui table tennis club, yo-yo, toy Batmobile, cheddar & chutney sandwiches to name a few.
