This episode, like The Inner Light, is so joyous and yet so painful, actually more so in my opinion. Suffering from depression at the moment and momentarily forgot which episode it is. Then the realization hit me and I couldn't bear it.

Now, Kat is wearing the sort of clothing that the Doctor should be wearing. Both Thirteen and Fifteen! Not something that is straight from a first year art student's MCU design project - that failed! Something like that or a painted bleach design which can have all kinds of symbols, motifs etc. With the first scenes of Thirteen building her sonic, I thought we were going to have a blacksmith Doctor, my own idea would have been that she had a workshop in the TARDIS and that she might have been an ironwrought sculptor that fashioned all sort of weird and wondrous imaginative sculptures - like Barbara Hepworth or Lynn Chadwick - based on all the planets and cultures that she had seen. It would have been an evolution of Twelve's music! Instead, we get a cardboard cutout cartoon flat of a wasted incarnation opportunity for further enhancing the Doctor.

I think they gave up too early. After this first incident I'm sure Picard could've gotten used to it and found a way to compartmentalize. It's not like he doesn't care about Beverly or Worf etc... and whatsername shouldn't be in danger all that often, given her job.

My second favorite episode. I can't say anything more then has already been said. But when I first saw this is a kid, I didn't care for it. IT was slow and boring... but now as a sort of adult, it speaks to me so much about how our lives mean so much more then we can ever now. Every single human has a story and that story is more important then any amount of money, any precious stone. We all have a story, so make yours a good one, live your life fully, and don't live being angry or burdened by guilt.

I think that neither of them seriously believed that staying together was an option, but they couldn't really come right out and say that to each other... hence the 'well, you could resign your position'/'well, you could resign yours'-- both knowing perfectly well that neither one was a workable scenario. Younger characters might have meant it; but these two had been places, seen things, and done stuff, and there was a shared, resigned regret that it was not going to work. (Which makes it even more wrenching, because it's abundantly clear that in other circumstances they would be wonderful together... to paraphrase one of the great lines, "In another reality, I could have called you my lover.") Oh... and as for Kat calling herself a romantic, I think that if you drew a Venn diagram of the set of people who are romantics and the set that are idealistic, they would be virtually the same circle. So... it's fine! ;)

I could maybe guess some may see this and think "Why doesn't the man in charge have to give up HIS position?" But here it makes sense because his moving would make a much bigger impact on things than her transfer would. I do like the way they have Picard suggest that she resign, but not for one second meaning it. It's also great that Riker feels he can go right to Picard with his concerns. Professionally, it made complete sense to bring it up right away, but also nice he felt comfortable enough with Picard to just say it right out.

I have found many times on this run through that when I wince a little at an approaching episode, fearful that the passage of time will have changed how I view the way certain issues are handled, I am left pleasantly surprised. Not always, but often. I think that episode was rather lovely, well performed and filled with so many sweet moments of characters behaving with respect, honesty and kindness to each other. The only slightly awkward note was, as the reaction highlights, Nella giving up her position, but even that was handled pretty well given the restraints of episodic television requiring everyone to be safely back in their places on the bridge next episode. I really enjoyed that. There aren't many shows like TNG that can produce a compelling episode of television that basically consists of characters being excellent to each other, and it is so refreshing. Thanks for the reaction.

The talk about the audio of things getting flagged by Youtube... What I don't understand is why do reacters have their videos flagged because of some pop song or whatever being played in the show or movie, but you can find almost any song in existence in its own video on Youtube.

It's very well done, but I think some people aren't fans of "relationship" episodes.

I think the line there is the age old Star Trek idea of humanity evolving. Starfleet doesn't have rules for it because it's expected that people would be mature enough to handle that stuff on their own merits, and I think by-and-large, they do. The times that doesn't happen are the exception, not the regular. We just see them more because it's a TV show that needs stories.

I could be wrong, but I don't see how Riker isn't Troi's superior. I don't know anybody who is directly over Troi in the science department, if she's a department head, then he is her direct superior, and as a bridge officer as well, he gives her commands all of the time.

Just the best single episode romance episode Star Trek ever did. And I love Nella Darren. How much she so much resembles Dr. Crusher is a lovely layer. Oh, and Paula, the reason the Intro theme to "Outlander" might sound like Picard's song is because Ronald D. Moore is the show runner on that. And it makes sense why Crusher would be jealous... not only does this woman look like her, but she somehow had something that pushed Picard out of his duty and restraint mentality and now he's giddy. But Darren and Picard is also probably one of the healthiest relationships on TV, probably because the actual drama of the relationship rely on circumstances outside of it. And frankly, what a great showing of how to cope with emotional situations in a professional setting. If they're threatening to overwhelm you, you aren't as efficient as you could be, so deal with them so they don't affect your professional life by constantly slipping through. Starfleet would cease to function if it's captains did not maintain that internal boundary and instead indulged themselves all the time. It's a lack of personal discipline. It's a much stronger showing of emotional and mental health compared to what other shows put forward as those topics, which are in contrast, quite reductive.

Fraternization involves improper relationships, ranging from overly casual relationships to friendships to romantic relationships. The no fraternization rule in US and most modern armed forces wouldnt affect Troi & Riker since he is not her superior - they are not technically in the same command structure. However, not all contact between enlisted persons and officers or subordinates and superiors is prohibited, just contact that would compromise (or have the appearance of compromising) order, discipline, and the chain of command. Jean Luc is on very thin ice.

Funny That

There are ways to deal with working alongside a partner, and to deal with conflicts of interest/avoiding favouritism. However, being in a position to order your partner to risk/sacrifice their life is something else. A captain more than most cannot have a relationship. Even if it is indirect, a captain will regularly decide to risk some or all of the crew. You can't risk any sense of favouritism when the stakes are that high. Hell even Kirk never crossed that line though in the 60s style he did "flirt" with it. Kirk and Picard are a lot more alike than the fan/cultural stereotypes would have you believe.

This is one of my personal favorites in all of Star Trek. And they did a good job dodging a number of tropes while also exploring the complexities of loving someone in a setting like this. They also let this episode breathe for the first two-thirds of the runtime, something that is rare to see in modern TV where you have to have a rising action-cliffhanger at every act break.

It amazes me whenever a new guest star comes in for romance and in the span of a few minutes both actors show such great chemistry. Full length movies have trouble doing that. Anyway I'm really looking forward to the episode after next week.

I also think it's not likely that a group like Starfleet would have no rules about such a thing. But I guess they maybe had to come up with that on the show to "allow" Picard to try to go forward with it. If it was forbidden, he never would've done it. They would need that rule, especially with a captain, for just this situation.

The flute is an amazing call back in this episode. You didn't have to see the previous episode to watch this one, he explains that it's an alien flute, but it's so much deeper when you know the backstory, especially since he probably hasn't shared everything that actually happened with Star Fleet.
