100% agree, I liked the way the show ended and am not a huge fan of any of the films. Imo First Contact is watchable but the other 3 aren't (and I downright detest Nemesis).

Katrina's character of "Cheryl" kind of reminds me of Estelle, Joey's agent on Friends. Also, Cheryl is Gates McFadden's actual first name. Gates is her middle name.

Definitely a stress-inducing episode. I think Kat really hit on something when Riker and the fake doctor were talking about treatment options. When the doctor mentioned “full synaptic reconstruction,” Kat rightly pointed out that such a treatment would be equivalent to a lobotomy. It particularly hit home for me, because synaptic reconstruction is essentially the holy grail “cure” a lot of anti-autistic bigots pine for. As an autistic brain’s structure is substantially different than that of a neurotypical brain, complete restructuring would be the only form a “cure” could take. If such a thing were possible (thankfully, medical science isn’t anywhere close), the “cured” person would bear absolutely no resemblance in personality or cognition to their original self. As a society, we have to stop normalizing these eugenic fantasies and learn to actually accommodate and support the disabled community, including, but not limited to, the neurodivergent. BTW, if Paula feels comfortable speaking more about her hearing-related disability, I’d be curious to know what labels or language she prefers (if any).

It's interesting that Riker got another "simulation within a simulation" episode. At this point he might just think all of life is a dream. Also love that Kat can't escape Moon Knight. All we needed was a scene of Riker talking to himself

I think it's awesome that you love Insurrection. It wasn't my intention to disparage anybody who likes those movies. I just was under the impression that they weren't particularly popular, even in the fandom.

I'm not a fan of Nemesis, but Insurrection for me is right under First Contact. I unashamedly love it. That being said, I totally understand the Gals not reacting to it.

It's okay Paula, most of the fandom consider the latter two TNG films as inferior, and I think the majority of the fandom will gladly admit to having sections of the franchise they consider inferior. Myself and from what I can tell a large part of the fandom would say everything made post 2016 is in that inferior column. I can't watch any of it because believe it or not, I don't like being THAT pissed off at Star Trek. I'll nitpick the shit out of the shows I like, but the vehemence I feel towards the new era's ?modernization" is something I don't need to add to every week. As for THIS episode, I saw it when I was maybe 14? It freaked me the eff out and left me unsettled for DAYS. Consequently, I love it. What a mindscrew. This, Relics, Schisms, Chain of Command, Face of the Enemy, Tapestry, Lessons, and a few you have yet to see are why I am always shocked that season 6 gets overlooked so much when people list their favorite TNG season. This episode is also why when I FINALLY saw "Inception" after hearing it hyped to hell and back I was quite underwhelmed by it. Everyone was captivated by its story and concept but I was just like, but this is just "Frame of Mind?" (With a few other Trek episode concepts thrown in too. Once you already know the concept from elsewhere, that movie is very much deflated because it's built so heavily on the novelty of the concept. Hence why I think Christopher Nolan is highly overrated as a writer/director. (And yet I love Interstellar) Oh, and I'm also boggled that people don't get Lost... Very clearly everything that happened on that Island was real. Only the season 6 side stuff was not... and that's not a knock on the girls saying that, but just how widespread that assumption is.

Great episode; one of the few I remember watching when it first aired with a real sense of apprehension and suspense. A most excellent mindfuck, indeed. I'm also totally onboard with the Gals reacting to just the first two TNG films; Generations may not be a great movie, but it has great character moments that do round out things for some of our heroes, and First Contact is just all around awesome. I'm with Paula on the other two, though; Insurrection is a total snooze, and Nemesis can go fuck itself (it destroyed the Berman-era of the franchise, and I'm not ashamed to say it). Only wish they could also react to a few of the TOS movies, too (for context's sake), but time is money; I get it. 😁

Then it depends upon if you trust that the character is telling the truth or not, I personally believe that everything that happened was real, but not everyone has the same opinion even though that was what the writers intended.

I fully support the decision to only commit to Generations and First Contact. Generations is the first movie and while it has some flaws, I remember it fondly and there are a couple arcs that are important. First Contact I think is the only TNG film that I can say is is a really good movie with no reservations. Are people really clamoring for you to watch Insurrection and Nemesis? Like I get the people who are bummed about you not watching DS9 because it's a fan favorite and critical darling, but those last two TNG movies are not great. On this episode, I really loved this one. I think it's super effective at getting the viewer to question what is real and what is not. Each scene is presented as if it is the true reality. You don't get the usual winks that clue you into what's really happening in the story. The viewer ends up almost as disoriented as Riker is and I just think it's good storytelling.

Maybe Katrina subscribes to the purgatory theory of lost, that the island essentially is not real and everybody died in the plane crash. It's not the intention the creators of the series had in mind but a lot of people believe it.

This might be my favorite episode, if only becuase I love mind fucks like this and they are almost never done this well. It's been I think since future imperfect since we had a full ok Riker focused episode and he really caries the episode.

I'm frankly not that much of a fan of any of the TNG films. I was excited when Generations and FIrst Contact came out, but upon years of reflection my opinions definitely changed. I'm satisfied with how the TV series ended and am fine with not having anything beyond that.
